I believe modafinil 200 mg(Modalert 200)is the generic equivalent. It's MUCH cheaper from a Canadian pharmacy. I ask my physician to write a fairly large prescription and then order it from Canada. No insurance company is involved. Of course, I only take this stuff two or three times a month, when I really HAVE to stay awake.

My daughter was diagnosed with narcolepsy and turns out she is allergic to Provigil (severe hives, swelling). She was prescribed Adderral, which available generic (amphetamine salts). She takes two Adderall XR in the morning and then just a plain old Adderall in the afternoon when she is prone to a "sleep attack." It's been working fairly well for her and they are just $10 apiece (lowest tier copay price) on our insurance.
See if your doctor can switch you over if that would work for you.

Thank you so much for the information. I plan to get off of the Provigil at the end of this current script. Spring/summer time should be a good time to do that. Provigil seems to have anti-depressant powers and this is the only reason I'm still on it. I originally start taking it for the sleep disorder. My pschiatrist agrees that it has anti-depressant factors but cannot be sold as such. I'm luck that my insurance accepts the prescription written by him - he is amazed, too.

Pegg, how much Provigil do you have to take for it to have an antidepressant effect? Like I said in a previous post, I've only taken it sporadically to stay awake. But I'm having a terrible problem with depression, and the usual antidepressants--although they DO work in general on my depression--absolutely ruin my sex life, which is depressing in itself! (Wellbutrin, the usual alternative, doesn't help my depression.) If you could tell me how many milligrams you take that's effective, maybe I could run it by my internist for his opinion.
Oh, in case you decide not to go off provigil, I found in my files the names of the pharmacy I ordered the modafinil from: canada-pharmacy.com. It was a WHOLE lot cheaper from them. You have to fax in your prescription, etc., but service was good.

JTP, I was taking 100 mg of Provigil(half a 200 tablet) and it was doing fine for keeping me alert during the day and pretty much taking care of the depression. THEN things changed and it was going to cost me $600 for a 3 month script. My doctor switched me to Nuvigil (same thing but cheaper). He started me on 50 mg and that wasn't enough (he didn't know how powerful it was so he started me low) I had to increase it to 100 mg(two tiny pills). And I'm doing fine. My sex drive is shot, too, but my gyno said it's due to menapause and not the medication. He is sending me to a special pharmacy that specializes in making a combo of hormone to suit what I need for my sex drive. I have to get blood work done first. I was happy to hear that there is actually something out there to help that problem.
