Hey Adam,

Welcome, and glad to hear you are doing well.

We would think that if all goes as planned then yes you should be easily to attend the prom and have a good time. Here you can click on the link and check out Mark's photo - go into the 3rd set called "Mark step 2 of 2 TAKEDOWN" - you'll see that he was and moving quickly and back to life after about 10 days.

Hi Adam,
Boy I wish I was 19 again what a wonderful time to be at in one`s life.I know it hasn`t been the greatest for you but wow what a positive attitude, good on you bud.As far as the surgery goes I wish I could tell you that it will turn out the way you want it to 100% guaranteed but nobody can. It`s all a crap shoot(pardon the pun). For some it goes according to plan for others they have all sorts of set backs.I don`t want to burst your bubble or put a damper on your enthusiasm(sp?)I`m just being brutuly honest with you,I hope that is what you want from me or any other member the truth.Have you talked with your girlfriend and explained to her that things might not work out the way you planned them? If not you should, be honest with her and let her know that maybe you won`t be able to attend,it all depends on the surgery of course. Can you put the surgery off till the prom is over? That would be a sure fire way of you knowing that you would be at the prom.I pray that one way or the other you make it to her prom it will be magical if it is in anyway the way my wife`s was.I too was older and out of highschool but 22 years later I can still remember that wonderful night, yes I married her and we have 4 beautiful kids-2 boys and 2 girls to show for it and it has been their love and support that have got me through the toughest times of my struggle with this dreaded disease we suffer from.God bless you, continue with that postitive attitude of yours and make sure to get her a beautiful corsage! Wink

Adam,
With the great shape you're in now I think you'll be fine to enjoy prom. As long as you don't have any complications...
I had a lot of my surgeries when I was a senior in High School and had until then been a starter on the basketball team. One week after surgery I was at practice lifting very light weights and doing a walk/jog thing. Of course I had 38 staples down the middle and they might not do that to you which would make it even easier for you to bounce back quickly.

You might be having some spasms in the pouch at that point while you're adjusting and you might not want to try any break dancing or anything but some light dancing should be okay. Of course there isn't an absolute answer and you just have to see how you're feeling and healing.

At my prom I had the ostomy and was about two months out from the surgery that created my J-pouch and got down and boogied with the best of them.
Enjoy yourself!

Adam,

Ditto what everyone has been saying. I think you will be fine from a recovery standpoint. My only concern would be how well things were working (frequency of BMs) at the point. You never know. You may be down to 3-5 BMs/day, or you may be going 20+ times still.

Either way, if you really wanted to go still, you could always adjust your intake of food the day of the prom to keep from having to run off to the bathroom every 1/2 hour.

So, you shouldn't have to worry about standing her up. If it were me, I would plan on going.

I felt ready to return to work at three weeks, and I'm about twice your age and not as active! Depending on how you feel, maybe you could forgo the dinner out beforehand... make a light chicken and rice dish at home instead.

Hello Adam

If surgery goes well (and the vast majority do) it should be a breeze. And what better motivation could you have!

Good luck, and keep us informed on how you got on.

David.
