Hi all - thought I'd get some pouchers opinions, maybe you guys have an idea what is going on with me.
For several days now, I have had the following symptoms: stomach pain, belching/gas/bloating, and very liquidy diarrhea. This does NOT feel like pouchitis, not in any way, shape or form. My pouch feels fine and there is no pain or urgency at all. The pain and problem seems to be much, much higher, way up in my stomach, not even in the small bowel. I really have no other symptoms. No fever, no vomiting, no dizziness, nothing else going on at all. In fact, I still have a pretty regular appetite and am eating regular meals as scheduled, and my energy level is good. But whether my stomach is full or empty, about once an hour I get a bad stomach ache (not a stabbing pain, just like sick to your stomach) and so a little while later, I try to go to the bathroom to try to relieve what's in there. *TMI warning* Stool does not pass easily, I have to push, and when I do, it all comes shooting out in a liquid stream. I thought maybe it was just some kind of stomach flu or bug, and I'm reluctant to go to the doctor because I doubt they would be able to find anything wrong, and they'd probably end up just saying go home, drink liquids and take it easy til you feel better. But if it's a bug, how long should I really expect this to last? This started Sunday morning. And with a bug, don't you usually have fever? But I also wonder if there could be some kind of problem in my stomach; you know us people with GI histories are always worried about some major problem. But I can't fathom what it would be, I mean, what suddenly becomes wrong with your stomach that could cause a problem like this? |

You are right. It is too soon to be able to tell if this a common "stomach bug" causing gastroenteritis, or something more major, like a stomach ulcer, gallbladder troubles, gastric reflux, the list goes on. You do not always have a fever with gastroenteritis. Depends on whether it is viral or bacterial and how severe the infection is. However, if it was the common norovirus, it probably would be winding down by now. So, if you are not improving by tomorrow, or if your symptoms get worse, you should see your doctor, or at least call.
And of course, make sure to keep your fluid intake up. Hope you are feeling better soon. Jan Take a deep breath and relax; this too will pass. |

Hiya
I'm sure this is a little too late to reply now, but I've had similar in the past a few times and both times I was told it was likely to be a small obstruction and to drink fluids for 24 hours. I did and both times, it just passed. The pain was high up like you say. I wonder if the liquid stools is simply its own reaction to what's going on above? x Jools x Dx UC 1985 J-pouch 2 stages 1996 Pregnant EDD 20th Oct 2010 |

I have had the same experience as Julieann. Rockandroller, as soon as I read your first few lines I thought 'partial bowel obstuction.' In fact I'm pretty sure that's what I've dealt with several times in the past few months. Always the pain up high, big bloating and stream of liquid. Take it easy on the food, drink mostly and move around as much as you can to get things moving.
If it doesn't pass in a day or two, or if you start vomiting, call the doctor. |
