...called Cholestyramine. It's a powder that binds with bile salts to thicken the stool. My doctor prescribed Cholestyramine along with Cipro for my first bout with Pouchitis after an unsuccessful try with Flagyl.

As upset as I was on Flagyl, I couldn't be more happy with this combination. I have been on it for over a week now and I have only had to go 3x for the past 4 days.

Maybe everyone has heard of Cholestyramine but I hadn't and at the very least you can discuss it with your doc if you think it could help you.

Does anyone else have any experience with this drug?

Never heard of it. Thanks for the tip! I'll ask my doc next week.

Its also called Questran and is an anti-cholesterol drug. My GP prescribed it for the exact same reason as Blake so that I wouldn't be going to the bathroom so much and be able to reduce my lomotil from 6 tabs a day. I didn't find that it did anything for me. Perhaps I wasn't taking enough or perhaps I wasn't taking it as frequently as I should throughout the day or perhaps the little bit of orange juice that I was mixing it with offset the benefits of the powder.

It didn't do anything bad for me so its definitely worth a try. Blake, how did you take it(mixed with OJ?) and when did you take it (prior to,with or after meals?)? I'm not averse to giving it another try - I've got lots at home.

I have heard of it, no experience with it though. My daughter who is the one with the jpouch takes cipro for pouchitis and just using the cipro alone, it brings her frequency way down. So I imagine the combo works really well.

I mixed the orange flavored powder with water and it tasted fine. I also made sure to drink it 2 hours after my last meal and 2 hours before my next meal. That's the only difficult part about it. For me, it worked best if I took it before going to bed.

Also, I've had to go 3x/day for the past for days - not 3x total for the last four days. I'm not sure if my initial post confused anyone, but just in case.
