What can I do to stave off the gallbladder-is-the-next-organ-to-be-removed bit from my j-pouch life?

I know if something's the matter with it and you eat fatty foods you may notice an ache or pain, but how can I be proactive in not letting it get to that?

Please don't say to stay away from fatty foods, that's a no no Wink Let's get creative!

I had the symptom and ended up opting out of surgery, but cutting fried foods out of my diet along with fats overload.
You want creative though, right? How about gallbladder flushes? here's one way to do it. i know there are others. be sure to talk to a good herbalist or other alt medicine practioner first! Accupuncture i thought about, but didn't persue. I did end up seeing a chiropractor and i think it might have helped as well.
still have the gallbladder. no real problems or pain, just occasional nausea and wanting to kill a younger cousin when he elbowed me in the right side during a heated game of basketball Cool
good luck!

Rima,Do a search with my name and gallbladder... There were about 45 replies and a good step by step what happened to mine and so on. Mine went from perfect to DEAD 100% in 3 to 6 months.. The pain was unreal! Now since its out never ever have pain again! I dont miss mine at all and the operation was simple!

There are risk factors that are not within your control, such as a history of UC, colectomy, and any family history of gallbladder/liver disease that may be present. Outside of that, you can maintain a healthy weight, eat a high fiber/calcium and low saturated fat diet, eat at regular intervals (to keep the gallbladder emptying), and get plenty of exercise.

But, of course those recommendations are virtually the same for general wellness and would be recommended for anyone.

Take a deep breath and relax; this too will pass.

Hi Rima,
My son , 22 now had a gallstone last year which would cause severe pain twice a week necessitaing ambulance on two occasions due to him being unable to breathe through pain.
He too was advised to have surgery.
However after overhearing a nurse in hospital we decided to try apple juice which as a natural remedy. It contains malic acid.I undersatn you can get this in pill form too but we havent bothered with those. He substituted all his drinks for apple juice which in reality meant he drunk aproximately 2 to 3 cartons a day. This did afect his teath..he was told to brush them every time he drank but he got a little lazy.
The pains gradually lessened and then after a month stopped alltoghether. He s not experienced any pains now for 6-7 months.Apple juice is still part of his diet but not in such large quantities. He has now included more other juices and generally changed his diet to no alcohol and less fatty foods.
I appreciate this may not work for you due to pouch but maybe mixing in psyllium husks in the juice would work.
Good luck with whatever you decide Smiler

Love your bumSmiler

Thanks everyone.

I will ask my doc about Malic Acid.

This crossed my mind because I feel a bit of pressure just under my breastbone(?) on the upper right side after I eat, it's not pain or anything, I only feel it when I take a deep breath, so I will see if this happens w/ every meal and will obviously be concerned and ask my doc about this if it contiunes.

As of last month all my bloodwork was normal so hopefully it is nothing serious.

If it is removed, do you need to take a pill or anything to make up for not having a gallbladder?

I don't have my colon, I don't have my spleen, and if this conitues I will be robbed of another organ! Like you Jason!!

Apple Juice? Sounds too good to be true. Does it matter what type or quality of apple juice. Does it cause looser or more frequent stools? (i know that apple juice is somewhat of a laxative sometimes). Is all malic acid good? wheere else is it found?

After having UC for 12 years and having the J-pouch surgeries this winter and spring I thought all things related to UC were 'cured'. Well actually i dont really believe that, but i have never heard anything about my Gallbladder being at risk. Is this something i should be concerned about? What gives??
