I know Crohns can affect the entire digestive tract, so I wondered if anyone has ever had or heard of problems swollowing or choking. At least once a day it seems I swollow something wrong, like it goes down the wrong pipe or I cough in the middle of swollowing. This started about 3-4 weeks ago. Just wondering?

Have a fabulous day!

Are you on any steroids? This happened to me once, and my doc suspected reflux caused by steroids. He gave me something for that, and it eventually went away, but yes, I know that constricted throat feeling.

I have had crohns for 3 years and about 2 months or so ago i started having problems swallowing. It seems like my throat will just seize up on me mid-swallow. I have had tests done and they just can't tell me why, kind of like they just can't tell me why people get crohns or why some people get sicker than others with it. I am a little sick of doctors telling me they don't know why, do know anything and what the heck are they getting paid so much for? I am a little bitter about that but i have been trying to let that go. Good luck and let me know if you find anything out Smiler

I habe crohns and have been choking recently, its quite frigtening to be honest.
I went to see my doc last wk and didnt mention the choking I just said I was fine etc etc then she asked me if I had noticed that my neck was swollen I said no and then mentioned the chocking, she has sent me for tests satying that I have a goiter and thinks that I could have a thyroid problem, i have also noticed that i have put on some weight and cant seem to shift it....normally I am around 9 stone whereas now i am 11 stone, i know im not at pavement cracker stage but i know its not normal for me....just have to wwait for test results i guess.
Has your thyroid ever been an issue?

You don't need to have Crohn's to choke. My mother and father were eating dinner at a Chinese restaurant in New York City and my mother began choking on a piece of General Tso's chicken. My father, acting quickly, performed the Heimlich maneuver on my mother. The result of this action was that the air forced out of my mother via the Heimlich maneuver dislodged that half eaten piece of General Tso's chicken and turned it into a projectile, and it missiled right onto the middle of the next table over where a large group was eating dinner. My mother tells me she spent about an hour apologizing to that dinner party.

Cataja, make sure that your loved one/significant other with whom you dine is trained in the nuances and subtleties of the Heimlich maneuver! My father was, and as a result he saved my mother's life.

How to do the Heimlich maneuver:

Hmmm...interesting.

DJB...thanks for the link. While I know everything that happens is not related to Crohns. This is happening daily, multiple times daily.

Torie...Actually...I had the right half of my thyroid removed 8 weeks ago. I had a cluster of hurthle cells, which luckily turned out to be non cancerous.

dholm...try not to get discouraged. Unfortunately until there is a cure for this disease, I think there will alway be more questions then answers. BTW...we are almost neighbors!

Lizz... no heavy steriod use for about 9 years. I'm on Humira shots once a week.

I'll ask about it at my next gastro appointment on Sept 8th. Something is up...just not sure what it is related to. Thanks for the suggestions. Smiler

Thanks CeCE.

dholm...I used to work at Knox Lumber in Hopkins, quite a while ago, but I know the area. Inver Grove is in the south east corner of the Twin Cities.
