Hi guys,
So I just had my second surgery August 17th (finally) where they took down the ileostomy, removed the rectum, and made the pouch. And besides from having 2 different abscesses in the incision, things have gone surprisingly really well. The only thing that I'm worried about is the crazy amount of pain in my bum! I haven't seen anyone else mention pain like this on the forum. I've read about the butt burn, but this is different. I guess there are 5 incisions and anastomses down there... but the doctors never mentioned that I'd feel so much pain down there either. They were worried about the pain from the incision, which is practically nothing compared to this. It's even hard for me to sit on my bum, and it hurts to have BMs. I just tapered off hydromorphone, and am now taking percocet, but it still hurts a lot ~Jennie Total colectomy +Ileostomy-August 2009 Proctectomy + Jpouch construction + Takedown - August 2010 |

Hi Jennie,
I am sorry you are in so much pain. However, I am a little confused. You said you had the takedown but they also made the j-pouch. Do you no longer have the ileostomy? Do you have a functioning j-pouch? I'm not sure I understand what stage you are at. Nevertheless, I hope your pain subsides quickly. Pain is no fun. dx UC 2008 - tried everything from nutrition to Remicade to get into remission to no avail I ended up dependent on Prednisone and and had no option other than surgery total colectomy 11/18/09 j-pouch formation 2/17/10 take down (scheduled for 5/11/10) |

Yeah I guess the way my surgeon does the J Pouch is a little different than most other surgeons. It's actually an "S Pouch" apparently too, instead of being in the shape of a J. But yes, the ileostomy is gone and I have a functioning pouch. For the first step, all he did was remove the large colon, and make the ileostomy. For the second step he reversed the ileostomy, made the pouch, and connected everything together all at once.

So has anyone else experienced this kind of constant rectal pain? I'm really worried that this isn't normal

I did not experience what you are describing but your procedure sounds almost more similar to a 1 step in the way that you had your rectum removed and are already immediately using that newly stitched area. Mine was removed during the first step so it had all that time to heal until step 2. Maybe that's why it's more painful but maybe those who have had the 1 step would be better off to share their experiences. I never knew there was an S pouch. Your Dr. must be really cutting edge? Where did you go?

Well I had the surgery done where I live in Ontario, Canada. It seems that there are not many Canadians on this site. I kind of wish that some other people had gotten the same style of this surgery that I did, because I have so many questions and I'm so worried that I'm going through isn't normal. My surgeon is conveniently on vacation, and the other surgeons who are covering for him are not familiar with his way of doing the surgery
