I had my take down August 2007, I initially lost 65lbs and have since put it back on and then some. Will I ever be able to lose it again? I still have issues about not digesting any vegetables. I miss my salads. If I get overindulgent with the fruits and vegetables, I get blocked and have to do a magnesium citrate flush. Also, will any doctor ever touch me for gastric bypass or is that just a dream lost now?

I know how you feel. I'm Miss Piggy again; my TD was in January. But if I'm honest with myself, I know my weight gain is because of not taking time to eat properly (ie: eating junk on the run), not exercising and eating too much once I finally sit down and have supper. Does any of this apply to you? I love salads too and I couldn't eat them without getting cramps etc to start with, but it's no problem now. Try again in a few months. How about using a blender and having gazpacho? Or making vegetable soup? That way you can get all the health benefits of vegetables without the blockages. I wish I lived near other J-pouchers on this site! We could have gone for walks together and helped each other keep the pounds off!

I've gained about 20 pounds and I chalk it up to actually being able to eat! With UC, I hardly ate unless I was at home. Now without that built in weight loss system (everything immediately running through me for the past 18 years) I might have to actually exercise and work out like the rest of the world! It really stunk having to upsize all my pants! Maybe I'll go hit the gazelle now! Ha!

The formula for losing weight is easy. Eat less, exercise more, or, take in exactly what your body requires in terms of metabolic output. To do this correctly, however, takes both knowledge and commitment. Knowing what to eat and how much is half the battle. Knowing how to work out and how much is the other half. Our bodies (and relevant genetic profiles) are all virtually the same on this line. There is no secret, no magic required, just hard work, knowledge and persistence. Gastric bypass will only address a symptom, not the cause. It doesn't make you "healthier" or make up for years of abuse to your body. You have to exercise and eat right to do this (and it is just as hard), which, if you do this anyway, will melt off the pounds.

See a nutritionist, get a personal trainer (cardio, cardio, cardio), and above all commit to yourself for yourself.

I agree with Zap ,,gastric bypass is not an answer. This was aheafty weight gain in very short space of time,,what is your usual diet on daily basis?..do you eat lots of suggary foods?.there so much you can do to stay within the pouch logistical requirements and not feel hungry. Excercise is a must in increasing your metabolic rate..start walking daily at least as it will give you a boost of energy and you dont eat when you walkSmiler
There must be something fundamentally wrong with your eating pattern for you to gain weight that fast.I am 7 weeks post takedown and am vigilant in reducing the bread/pasta/potatoes so they dont form a huge part of my diet, only enough to be used as binding agents for salads and well cooked vegetables.I ve stepped up on protein intake,,fish.meats(lean)and chicken mainly. I have eliminated cakes /sweets /chocolagte..anything sugar based as it causes but burn too. Let us know what you eat ..sometimes its good to reassess where you are at.

Hi Ireland and Soph,

I feel for ya. I lost weight with every surgery, eventually gained it back, then some. This time I lost about 20 pounds after the obstuction surgery. I gained 3 back so far. So last week I bought a tread mill. When I belonged to a gym, that was really the only thing I enjoyed doing. It's hard to get out and walk all year in Minnesota. Before the last big prednisone push, when I had colitis, I got down to a size six. I did it with weight watchers and walking everyday. My plan is watching an entire TV program while I walk. It's set up front of the 36" TV in the family room. Well...that's my plan, I hope I can stick to it. Good luck to you guys! Smiler

I got shredded abs after having a j-pouch - I wish I'd taken a picture case I had surgery 6 weeks ago for a hernia and I've done nothing but lie on the couch since. In any case losing weight is about total amount of calories consumed vs. calories burned during the day. It's got nothing to do with being able to eat salad or not.

I lost a lot of weight before my one step. Then I lost a bunch more after. Gained a lot back since my temp ileo. Have not been as active and I have been enjoying a bit too much eating whatever I want again. Plus I have been a bit depressed lately.

The science of losing weight maybe simple, but that doesn't make easy.

I have gained a ton of weight over the years, about 30 lbs. over healthy. I credit that to having to eat mostly carbs and not enough fruits and veggies. Exercise is a distant and fond memory, it is way too painful now. I am hoping to get my adhesions cut out so I won't have so much pain.

On the upside, I recently started taking an appetite supressant, and have lost 5lbs!

I've scoffed so much chocolate during Christmas that I'm actually feeling pretty motivated to eat healthily as of Jan 1st. I have to try to trim down a bit since I'm having my belly fixed at the end of the month. Zap, you're right. I have to exercise more and eat more healthily. End of story.

I got soooooooo fat and a year ago I had a VSG vertical sleeve gastrectomy. I have lost nearly 50 kilos (approx 100 pounds or there abouts ) So yeah some Drs will touch J pouchers for obesity surgery.
I would like to add, having a Vertical sleeve gastrectomy is one of the BEST tings I have ever done. I love it !
Also, I take 2tsp of Epsom salts , (Magnesium Sulfate)daily, otherwise I cant empty my bowel at all. I have been doing this for years. I have a sluggish w pouch.
Works well for me.
