Question for ppl who have had been disconnected from pouch or have gone back to illeo after TD.
I am meeting with stoma nurse again tomorrow to see where I would like to have my 2nd stoma (getting unhooked from pouch this friday) My Dr told me today to have them also mark the left side of my belly because he may need to put it over there (I am assuming because of scar tissue from other operations)My question is this... Is there anyone on the site that had their first stoma on one side and then another one on the opposite? What did you think? Any difference? Thanks Jason - Pa statie7104@yahoo.com Step 1 Jan 06 Step 2 March 06 Spleen & Gallbladder June 06 Pouch Disconnect / End Illeo May 07 |

Yep, been there, done that.
My original was on my right side; the one I have now is on the left. Honestly, I think the left side has been easier to deal with (changing, cleaning, etc…). Maybe because I am right handed? But both of them were in bad spots next to my belly button and above my waist. Not easy to deal with there. Just make sure you agree on a spot where your skin doesn’t fold and you can wear cloths comfortably. You may want to have the ET nurse stick a bag on you and see how it feels. Remember you’ll have to live with it day in and day out. 6M$S (Bill) |

Thomas had his stoma re-sited from right to left. Not sure there was much practical difference. The first ostomy was done under emergency circumstances, but we never got any placement advice before the second one, either. That was a problem, because it turns out things look different in different positions. His stoma was fine when he was lying down, but the wafer went right over a crease that formed when he was in a in a sitting position. So that's the first place it usually came loose and leaked. If you don't have a nurse who can help, I would definitely experiment to find the best placement.
I got a ConvaTec ostomy supply catalog in the mail a few days ago. It looks like they're continuing to make improvemens. Thomas' Mom |

I had the exact same situation as six million dollar sphincter. It was easier on the left side. It's no big deal. But what I'm worried about is if I ever need another one. Where will it go then?

Thanks everyone ... I agree... The good thing about this rehook is I know what and where I dont want it. Mine was about 1 1/2 inches to close to my belly button and if it wasnt for eakins seals and the hype tape, there would be some issues... I figured it out and I was fine. However, I will make sure this one is over enough no matter what side they put it on. I guess its no big deal what side they put it on, I just never thought about it on the other side!
jmc77 I had to lol so hard on your comment about what and where they would put the next one on you - that a great way to look at things and brought a huge smile to my face. Connie, as we speak i have a wafer on (one of my old ones ) and I am moving around and seeing what works Thanks all for the help Jason - Pa statie7104@yahoo.com Step 1 Jan 06 Step 2 March 06 Spleen & Gallbladder June 06 Pouch Disconnect / End Illeo May 07 |
