I am 3 weeks after my first of 2 surgeries. I am having this awful pain on my right side like to the right of the stoma. Everytime I ask the nurse about it she says it is normal and it is just my intestines going back to where they should be.
Has anyone else expierenced this pain and if so how long did it last and what did you do to relieve it?

3 weeks after step 1 and I was in agony. Some of my pain was localised there, too. I had an abcess that didn't show up till I had an MRI. All the previous CT scans missed it. It could be pain from the trauma of having your colon amputated, but if you feel generally ill, try to get an appointment with your doc to have it checked. Better safe than sorry. I had a lovely stoma nurse, but even she missed how ill I was and didn't realise things were anything but normal. No-one but my GI doc raised the alarm. I couldn't know i was feeling worse than I should; it's not like I'd ever had a colectomy before. So I say if you feel something's not right, get the experts to check it out. Good luck!

Thanks for the reply! Overall I feel great it is just this pain. Sometimes it is sharp and all other times it is just there. I did talk to the nurse and she said it is normal. What I dont understand is if it is so normal how come more people on here havent had it?

Normal does not mean usual or even common. It means that with a normal recovery, this can occur and you are one of the unlucky ones to get it.

However, that said, if you still feel that something just is not right, don't just talk to the nurse but ask to speak to the surgeon. Sometimes we just need to hear it from the surgeon that it is OK. You never know, the surgeon may say that no, this sounds different and I need to see you. So, don't worry yourself to death about it and talk to the surgeon if you need to.

Take a deep breath and relax; this too will pass.

Thanks...nurse called my back and got me in to see the Dr. on July 5th. I think I do just need to hear if from him. She also said that I will be amazed that at about 6 weeks how great I feel but until then I am going to have some pain.

Great, that's only a few days away. I'm sure it'll help put your mind at rest to see the doc personally. Good luck!
