I just completed j-pouch surgery and did not have to have an ileostomy as I had the procedure done at UCI and that was one opition they offered if the surgery went well and I took it. MY problem today is watery discharge and I would appreciate some advise on how to control it. I am on an unrestricted diet, but what foods should I start eating now to start, getting rid of this pure water that is coming out. Is it to early to start with imodium as my system is just now getting active. Thanks for all your advise. Rick
Doctors' opinions vary regarding the use of bowel slowers early in the recovery period. However, my surgeon had me on Imodium before discharge. I also had a 1-step. It helped, but those early months will be a challenge no matter what. I was also placed on Metamucil for thickening, but I found it just increased my gas and had me going more. It's best to avoid raw fruits and vegetables for now, along with dairy, and stringy meats. The bland, starchy stuff tends to be most helpful, but you will need to experiment to see what works best for you. Applesauce, bananas, and rice are always good for diarrhea. The diet link from this site is good also. http://www.j-pouch.org/diet.html
The main thing is to not expect too much at this point.

Take a deep breath and relax; this too will pass.
