I had a colonoscopy two months ago and it showed that my rectum was inflamed. When I saw my surgeon last month he said he would want to check it before surgery to see if it was still inflamed. He said if it was he would take it out, but if it wasn't he would leave it in. Why wouldn't he just take it out even if it looked good? If it was inflamed before but cleared up now and he left it in, wouldn't it just flare up again and eventually lead to another surgery?

Sounds odd to me. With UC the standard procedure is to take everything out for just the reason you talk about. I would try to get some clarification and if he is still bent on leaving the rectum perhaps a second opinion.
