My son is almost a month post surgery for creating his J-pouch. He still is passing pinkish mucus. Also complains of his but hurting inside but only at night? Is it because he is holding his mucus? He is scheduled for a scope next Wednesday, so they can make sure everything is healing good. What does the scope involve? Meaning how long will he be sedated? how long till we can bring him home? And will he be having any pain after the scope? We just want him to be OK for our trip to the carribean in two weeks.

I was in the same boat as your son after i had my pouch created. I am still passing that pinkish mucus 3 1/2 months after my surgery and have some butt pain once in a while. But overall, i would not think it's anything to worry about. The scope will tell for sure if there is anything going on though. And the scope is not a big deal either. just a peek up there to see whats going on. Have fun in the carribean!

Sounds all normal to me.

They probably wont even sedate him for the scope- it's not too bad of a procedure, and it's NOTHING like having it done with a colon. It's literally a matter of seconds compared to minutes with a colon.

This early in the game, he needs to remember to take 1 day at a time...

The scope will tell if there really is any problem, but it just sounds normal to me. I have an end Illeostomy and still have a rectual stump. I get mucus two - three times per week even after 3.75 yrs. It was much more frequent during the first 6 months. You need to remember that the part of his intestines from his temp ille to his j-pouch and rectum are still alive and the mucus is most likely just normal discharge. For me, I even get a sensation of a BM whenever I urinate, but I associate that to the muscles still working in that area despite my lack of colon.

Now, as for the scope: It shouldn't take any more than a few minutes though he might find it quite uncomfortable and somewhat painful - depending on the sedation. He will probably be getting an I.V., which I personally find to be painful - I HATE I.V.'s and the nurse never seems to be able to find my vein. In fact, I just underwent a scope on last Friday and the surgeon had the test done BEFORE the nurse even started my sedation. Don't know why they bothered with the I.V.? I don't know how old your son is, but the younger he is the more painful it will seem. Good Luck and just be there for him.

Thanks guys, He is 11 and Autistic but he knows whats going on. Last night he had some blood twice with his mucus and it was brighter then what its been? The surgeon said its normal as long as its not alot of it?

Diehl, the scope is nothing. If all goes well, you should be home within a few hours. Once the sedation wears off, he'll be fine. All they do is put in a little camera, and possibly take a few biopsies. Good luck

Why is he "holding" the mucus. If possible, have him just go to the restroom often and practice emptying.

If it's a matter of leaking, have him wear a pantiliner - strategically positioned, of course.

And don't worry, leakage of mucus is no indication of after takedown. In fact, leakage after takedown is not necessarily an indication of what it will be like long-term.

From what I remember, blood is normal as was already said. And as long it as it's not gushing, he should be fine. He might also see a stitch or staple pop out. Or some overflow from the ostomy. All normal.
