Well being from Maryland and growing up near the Chesapeake, I love eating blue crabs. Unfortunately they dont love me back. However I havent tried them since my newly acquired j-pouch. Well I ate them on Tuesday the 4th and I have had cramps, gas, and increased frequency in bowel movements. Whats the deal? Did this cause pouchitis. Could there be a partial blockage? The cramps are in the lower abdominal region, mostly center, as in not favoring the right or left sides. The cramps are partialy removed after a bowel movement but they come right back.

That's a bummer Mike! I can tell you that I get some awfully bad pain from gas. I don't understand why it is so much worse now. I never got gas pain before surgery. It took me while to figure out that was what my pain was. I just refused to believe that this pain could be from gas. I wonder if a little pepto would help you. I don't think the crab could have given you pouchitis. But maybe the timimg is just a coinsidence. The pouchitis could have been brewing before the crab...? Good luck

I think sometimes we want to jump right to pouchitis as the cause of a lot of our problems - and it definitely could be that. However, when you are talking about seafood, I wonder more about bacterial infection in there causing you problems. Seafood is a notoriously bad source of bad bacteria. And, of course, I agree that it could be a combination of the two. Bad bacteria from the crabs causing upset that results in pouchitis... it's possible.

Thanks for the replies. I was hoping it was just gas but the cramps dont go away. They have been constant since Wednesday morning. I sure that food is out of me by now. I am going to try some Pepto though, I just need any kind of relief. The gas pains are much worse now than they were before for me also Cataja. I just fear pouchitis cause this is similar to how I felt when I got my first and only case of pouchitis so far. Well I will try something to calm down the gas and if it fails I guess it's back to good old antibiotics. Thanks

Hi, Mikey. I hope you are feeling better by now.
I have had a cramping type sensation in my lower right side since Thursday. Intermittantly, it's been a little more generalized, and my entire belly was involved. I called one of my surgeons today, and he thinks it might be pouchitis so he put me on Cipro for two weeks. If it doesn't start to improve or gets worse, he wants to scope me in his office. Anyway, if you do have pouchitis, try not to get too upset about it. It happens, but it's resolvable and doesn't necessarily have to be a chronic thing. Good luck. Let us know how you're doing. |
