Had a j-pouch since 1999. At least once a year suffer intestinal blockage requiring hospitalization. Have always been advised not to have surgery to remove scar tissue. After most recent visit to hospital last week surgeon suggested removing scatissue/adhesions laproscopically. Sais success rate about 60-70%. Anyone any experience here.

Thanks

Hi. I had my surgery and take down in 2004. Almost a year after my takedown I had a mechanical blockage- I went to the hospital and over night it opened and I started going, however, my small bowel was edematous, and my GI doc and a surgeon here in Knoxville that he recommended (my colo-rectal surgeon was in Atlanta, and was on vacation of course) thought I should go ahead with the surgery. He tried to do it laproscopically but there was too many adhesions and scar tissue, so he went through the original opening. It took him a few hours to cut through everything- it was caused by the scar tissue growing around where the small bowel was sewed back together at the take down. I had always felt a pulling there under my scar when I went to the bathroom, but I thought it was normal.
I was in the hospital 10 days (2 days before surgery), and had an ng tube for 7 days as my bowels did not want to wake up. However, since the surgery it has been great. That feeling I had under the scar is gone- and I have not had any bloackages or feelings like I am going to get one except one time, and I just drank extra water (I had eaten corn) and everything started coming out. For me it was a good choice to have the surgery.

Good luck.

Linda
