I notice alot of peoepl on this board are always talking about Cleavland hospital. Are they realy the best hospital for Jpouch surgery? Are there alot of people on this board from other states and are traveling to Cleavland to see doctors there? I am from Massachusetts and I am looking for a doctor just incase I have to get my pouch done over. The doctor I am seeing has never done a redo and is afriad to do one. So are the doctors in Cleavlansd the best at this procedure? Thanks

That's what I have read here and on line. I had a wonderful surgeon close to home that did my surgery but if I had major problems with my pouch and need a re-do, I would definately make the trek on over to the Cleveland clinic. Marianne DX UC 2005 when I was 37 Tried every drug and diet....all failed Step 1- 6/25/10 (colectomy & J-pouch creation) Step 2- 10/8/10 (take down) Very pleased with my results.

They are one of the best! Another great option is Mayo in MN. First surgery of 3, 6-8-11. They took out my colon and tested it! No CD! YAY!!! 2nd surgery did steps 2 & 3 together 9-7-11.

They are highly rated but that doesn't mean there aren't excellent CR surgeons all over the country. If I lived in the Midwest I would consider them, but I have an excellent surgeon here in California and I don't need to travel. Sue

I can think of several drs in Boston who have Probably done redos - have you checked with dr Becker at Boston medical center, dr Peter Mowschenson at BiDMC or dr Ronald bleday at Brigham? I have met them all - PM me if you want info on my experiences with each. My personal fav is dr Patricia roberts at Lahey - don't know if she has done redos but she did my removal and did it well.

They are the best had all 3 of my surgeries there, the best doctors any where. I go there was jsut there last week to see Dr. Shen. I love that hospital . My surgeon is no longer there he left and is in Pittsburgh now where I live so I also see him since he did my surgeries, I had single port laproscopy, I have a very little scar, all three of my surgeries where done through the same port. But I also see Dr. Costedio there or Dr. Remzi. Mayo Clinic is also good. Good Luck

I am sure in Boston you can find a very good, highly qualified surgeon for the j-pouch redo.

Yes, they're the best (and I haven't even been there) When I was talking to my Mayo surgeon, even she used them as an example of places for me to look on-line for information and questions/answers. From my research, Mayo was one of the pioneers of IPAA (I'm not saying the first), and their surgeons, and those who have trained there, are among the best. That being said, CC is the premier place to have this done. I like that you can go to the hospitals website and look at all the CR surgeons and see where they went to school. Yes, a good school doesn't guarantee anything, but not every bozo can just walk into Duke or Harvard and get a medical degree. Also, it's one thing to seek the best under special/difficult situations, but I'm sure that avery major city has qualified surgeon - just chose one who only does this type of thing. Does any general surgeons even do this anymore? Though my CR specialty surgeon does do other surgeries when she's on call for the ER. Things are never so bad that they can't get worse.

Yes CC is the best. They are the most knowledgeable "team" for pouches, esp. problem cases. I went to Vanderbilt in TN for my surgeries, and had amazing doctors, but they simply don't have the volume and devotion to pouch research that CC does. I had problems for five years and saw doctors all over the country and no one solved them until I went to CC. I wish I had gone there years ago. That said, I don't think my problems came from having surgery at Vanderbilt-I had a very skilled surgeon who did a good job on the pouch, but as far as treating pouch problems, Cleveland was much more advanced-it's just b/c they do all the research. Hi, I am in California @ Stanford hospital. My husband has pouch dysmotility issue, the GI doctor & the surgeon are not in favor of pouch redo. Looks like the only option we have here is permanent ileostomy. Please advise if I should consider pouch redo and if yes, which hospital/doctor is the best for pouch redo? Sue, looks like you are from CA, can you please let me know who is your doctor and do they do pouch redo? Thanks Charu

Oop, Charu...I posted on your other thread. The most competent and experienced CR surgeon in CA for jpouches is Dr. Robert Beart. He's at Glendale Memorial Hospital in Los Angeles. He was a pioneer on the jpouch surgery and has done over 2000 of them and lots of revisions. Sue

I'd also toss in Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, FL as well. Top Notch folks down here. FAP Diagnosed 7/28/04 First Step 8/10/04 Take Down 12/14/04 Highly Modified Whipple Procedure - 9/26/11

We went to University Hospitals of Cleveland/Case MEsical Center after a subpar experience at CCF. But that was in peds not adult so I can't speak to the adult surgeons there. UH saved Booski's jpouch and sm intestine after she got a volvulus. In fact, it was the 5th one in the US of the type she had and the 5th surgery that was performed in the US. Since we live here and are at the Clinic all the time we are a little more demanding of medical care possibly. They are very good at many things, but we've found UH to be even better at some things. best of luck! Peace and Love

My pouch specialist trained at Cleveland Clinic and while he praises his mentor Dr. Shen and this facility, he told me that they are much more aggressive in surgical treatment approaches to different medical issues than are other nationally well known J Pouch treatment facilities like Mount Sinai Medical Center in NYC. I was very interested to hear this observation from him. Perhaps Cleveland Clinic is the place to go to resolve an issue through surgery, due to this philosophy.
