Can someone tell me why I cannot eat fruit? I can eat anything – huge salads - any veggie, nuts, popcorn...anything but fruit.
Within an hour or so I start cramping. I can literally feel where it is being digested and I feel it slowing moving through my digestive track. By the time it hits my pouch it becomes very uncomfortable to pass. My pouch aches as little by little I will pass it. It usually takes 2-6 hours to pass.

Thursday evening I ate a mango. I started feeling uncomfortable within the hour. I was in pain all day Friday and Saturday I started passing it around Sat. @ 5pm and ended around 11. The weird thing is I ate other things after the mango and they passed before the mango with no problem.

My main question is this.....I do not understand why I start having problems right away digesting fruit? I ate fruit with the ileo (end and loop) – no problems at all. From my mouth to where the loop ileo incision was is the same (I had laparoscopic surgery too). Why do I feel discomfort and yes sometimes pain before that? I understand the discomfort and possible semi-blockage after the loop ileo incision (possible scar tissue, narrowing of intestine etc.) that makes sense, but why would I start with pain within an hour of eating? Mad

BTW – I am not a fan of juicers and can fruit is fine but I want to pick the apple off the tree and eat it. Frowner Well maybe peel the skin off first. Wink

Thanks to all who can give me some insight on this one. Smiler

Maybe you could experiment and see if a juiced mango creates the same symptoms for you. I agree, juicing a fruit just isn't as satisfactory, but if you're craving fruit AND juicing allows you to give into that craving, then maybe you'll have to become a reluctant fan. That doesn't mean you have to give up 'real' fruit, it just means that you'll have to pick the times that you're willing to feel less than perky when you eat it.

The fruit has sugars (fructose) that the veggies and nuts do not, and these could be fermenting rapidly and giving you gas pains.

Are you taking different meds or fiber to thicken things up than you did prior to takedown? Another thought would be that probiotics might help reduce the amount of fermentation by changing what bacteria you have. The presence of the pouch might have affected that, and these bacteria could have spread upward in your digestive tract.

Many people are intolerant of large amounts of fructose and it is correct that if you do not digest them well, due to a lack or insufficient quantities of the enzyme to digest it, it will later be acted upon by bacteria, causing gas and bloating. Also, the undigested sugar itself can draw water into the intestines, increasing diarrhea. This can be an inherited deficiency (Fructose-1-Phosphate Aldolase Deficiency- quite rare), due to poor absorption in the intestines (more common) or just a temporary thing related to your fast transit. It would make sense to avoid fruit for the time being and try again later when things are more settled before assuming this will be permanent. You may also find that some fruits are better tolerated than others.

Take a deep breath and relax; this too will pass.

Thanks for the answers....

No I am not taking any meds nor do I need anything to thicken things up. I do not know anything about probiotics but that seems to be the buzz word of the 2000s. What would I need to take and where would I get it. I see it now in stores...bread, yogurt, juice etc....but is it a pill/liquid that I could take on a daily bases to help.
I read Jan link about Fructose malabsorption or Dietary Fructose Intolerance and EVERY symptom it lists I have...even though I have a hard time admitting some of the symptoms I know I have them. Frowner
I have a doctors appointment on Friday and I am going to talkto her about it.

Thanks for all your help, I seemed to be pointed in the right direction. Big Grin

Probioitcs are not just a "buzz trend thingy" it actually does work and most of the time you don't need to spend a fortune to buy it. I take PB 8 brand probioitcs. I have seen it just about everywhere...IE grocery store, pharmacy, like Walgreens, Longs, Safeway etc...
It sells for about 10 to 11 $ for a 30 day supply and can help thicken and help keep pouchitis and a couple other "itises" at bay. I don't take it all the time but I do know I'm better regulated when I do..

At the risk of repeating myself and sounding like a commercial for the book...try reading 'Fit For Life'...It gives you all of the answers to the questions about fruit...fruit on an empty stomach digest in as little as 20 minutes...it is just water, fructose and fiber...carbs such as bread products take up to 3 and animal protiens 6 or more...when you throw fruit on top of carbs you are mixing sugar with wheat or other grains...presto...Beer! that means loads of gas and cramps and alcohol fermentation etc...it is a little simplified but you get the idea...add meat on top of that ( a sandwhich?) and you have a mess that hangs around for hours and the fruit acts like 'Draino'!!!! Mad
Cramps and pain and bloating and dizziness and nausea and all of the rest not to forget the vomitting and diareaha that can put an end to your fruit carreer!
Try eatingit only alone and on an empty stomach ( breakfast?) or around 5pm a good 4 hours after lunch or dinner...
Test it out and see what works for you...I have rediscovered the joys of fruits since I started using this method...
But to get more info ...read the book...
