Hitting the gym!!!

So,

Going for my first real heavy workout since my take down surgery at the gym tonight. A bit nervous. Have been rock climbing steadily since my last surgery but finding i still need to strengthen my core and stamina quite a bit.

Thinking i am going to avoid the crunches and pull ups for a bit however. To much invested in my tummy to risk it Wink

Has anyone done yoga since their surgeries? It is a monster workout, especially for climbers. Just worried about all the twisting that goes with it.

Good luck with your workout. I have been working out steadily for awhile now with no problems. It does wonders for my mood and it doesn't do anything to hurt my pouch.

I have done yoga, lifted heavy weights, ran, you name it! It took me awhile to get back to it. I had the same fears you did.

We won't know unless we try right?

We certainly do not know until we try.

Good to hear that you have been able to successfully work hard in the gym. It is the one piece really missing from my climbing regiment and w/o the strength training, i am starting to plateau.

Seeing as how i am not one for patience or allowing things to hold me back from where i want to be, i find this unacceptable.

Looking very forward to waking up in pain ( a good type though), tomorrow morning.

I do yoga almost daily. No problems with twisting poses.

Go slowly on the ab work and heavy weights. Did you read Lizz's "J-pouch no-no's" post? Just something to keep in mind.

My view is it's better to be active and feel energetic. There are risks in everything we do in life anyway.

Also, when I was doing black belt training in taekwondo, I was doing 2 hour sessions 4-5 days a week with lots of core work. No j-pouch problems, just dehydration issues, so I would drink fresh juice with added salt, rather than water.

Good luck!

Great idea on the juice with salt Nikki. Thank you much.

My martial arts days are over though. I got my second degree black belt and my wife made me quit. Was afraid of the path i was going down. Smiler

Full contact fighting is so much fun though...

Work out went well tonight. We shall see how things feel in the am.

Thank you again

Derek

When I got back into it, I made sure I went really light and just did core work for the first couple weeks. Then I gradually worked my way back in. I swear to you I had a 6 pack back in two months back in the gym.

Lifting weights is such an outlet for me. I never thought I'd be able to do it again.

Yoga and pilates are GREAT for building core strength without the risk of crunches. Definitely helped me! Go for it!

How long after all of your take downs did you start different levels of exercise? Like from walking onto weights or running or whatever. I'm only a few months now but I used to be very fit before being stricken down by uc, I'm now weak and tired all of the time. I know exercise will help my energy levels but I'm scared about causing some damage so I've been extra careful, I've been through too much to undo it all now. I would never have thought martial arts even possible. But anyway, does anyone have a rough timescale of when I can expect to be able to do certain forms of exercise, I know everyone's different and it's difficult, but just a rough guide Smiler I miss my former health as I'm sure most of the people on this website do. X

I've got a green light, I've got a little fight, I'm gonna turn this thing around- The killers ( read my mind)

Thank you for the info all. Gym time was awesome. Feel sore but wonderful. Hitting it about 4 days a week plus my climbing of course.

Stew,

I was rock climbing 3 weeks after my take down. I started very slowly. Food intake/energy was the hardest thing for me as i needed to relearn how to eat again. I had very little appetite and a few blockages made me a bit terrified of food.

Take it slow. Eat for energy a good 2 hours before and go to it.

Good luck

Derek

Hey Derek,
Where do you go rock climbing around here? Have you ever been to that place in A2? I've wanted to check it out.

I didn't have any energy after the 1st surgery (to create the j-pouch) but I walked as much as I could and did some yoga. After the takedown surgery, I was walking immediately. Like Spooky, I got my core strength back doing yoga and some pilates. I gradually introduced light weights.

I asked my surgeon if I could return to taekwondo and he didn't see any problems, so long as I didn't get kicked in the abs. However, I regret that I delayed my return to taekwondo for 4 years. I'm sure I could have done it within 6 months of the surgery, but I just let my worries get the better of me. My only problem when doing martial arts is dehydration, but because I'm dehydrated, I don't need the bathroom.

Sara,

I indoor climb at Planet Rock in both A2 and Pontiac. I also do some route setting. We usually climb 3 days a week. If you are interested. let me know. I can hook you up with some day passes and lessons and you are more than welcome to come hit the walls with us.

We have a pretty large group of people of all levels. You would love it.

You can't really damage anything this far out. I do Olympic Weightlifting and Crossfit and in 2-3 months I am going back to it. I will deadlift 375 this year Wink

Coconut water is the best thing to drink with some salt in it for dehydration and of course if you are real bad just swig some pickle juice. Kills leg cramps as well if you form any after working out. Also it is not how much you drink the day you work out but how much you drink the day before. I don't think people understand that.
