I am interested to know from others how long they suffered rectal pain after takedown. I am 3 1/2 months and still get it. Mostly occurs in the afternoons after a few BM's.

I got home from the hospital feeling ok. But I couldn't sit, it hurt so bad. After a couple of months, I had a severe fever. ER doc found an abcess around, my rectal area. The pain went away with strong antibiotics. But soon it came back with a vengeance. 4 months later my surgeon gave me the ileostomy again. He said he took care of the problem, and I could be reconnected in a few months. Soon it was back again, and I had to go to a permanent ileo, and remove the entire anus. No pain since, it's been 1 year now.

Rectal discomfort, if not if not associated with a fever or bleeding or any other abnormality, is pretty normal. Especially at only 3 1/2 months. It can take up to a solid year or so for things to recover and start working fully. Considering these muscles where not used for sometime because of the ostomy, they are getting quite the workout now. Try hot baths to soothe the muscles and help clean things. I take them daily if needed when i either eat something hot and spicy (major weakness), or i have added something new to my diet and it puts me in overdrive. I would not worry about this right now. Also, If your bm's are really solid, make sure you are staying well hydrated. You might be straining to pass and this can also cause soreness. I do not take any immodium or any stool thickeners. I like to keep it easy to pass. Derek UC 22 years since 18 Step 1- April 29, 2010 Step 2- November 8, 2010 Mucusectomy w/advancement-2/14/2011 Step 3- May 2, 2011 Can't believe how i feel!!!!!

Er....I had a rectal abcess and an infection without any fever or elevated white blood count. It had walled itself off. Pain is not normal. Mine was finally found when they did an exploratory and after the infection was cleaned out and the cuff removed I never had pain again. I guess we should have clarification on whether it is pain, or just discomfort after multiple bathroom trips over a short period of time. I usually am very comfortable. But if i send my system into a tizzy, i will get uncomfortable very quickly. More info please. And any of us can have a pretty major problem pretty quickly. I tend not to go to worst case unless more symptoms show. My pain occurs After BM's. I usually have only 1 BM in the morning after breakfast and as everything has been rested overnight this doesn't cause much of a problem. Once the ms start in the afternoon it gets painful. It's like it opens the floodgates and I have more BMs in a shorter period of time. The pain is in the canal and lasts for quite some time. I never had an ileo as I had a one step. BM's are formed but soft and I am very careful not to strain. Also have sitz baths 3 times a day. The pressure of the pain also makes me feel like going again. I have a fissure on the outside which have healed a lot and dont seem to be causing this pain. It is perhaps an internal fissure. Can they check for those in the docs office or is a pouchoscopy required.

Gary: What exactly is the pain like? I experience severe rectal cramping and pain. It feels like a menstrual cramp in the rectum X10. I ratches up and up until I can no longer act normal around people. It always feels like stool is trying to be pushed out.I have to squeeze very hard and even then still have accidents. Then it passes. The time varies. Lately is has come on every 6-7mins for hours. It's excrusiating. It sounds like yours is more surgery recovery. After a BM it feels almost like there is still something inside trying to get out, and there is a stinging sensation. I don't have any accidents but there is that pressure feeling. Once I have the first BM it seems to be aggravated and then wants to push out any more stool, even if it is only a little.

I had quite a few spasms up until about 4 months. After that, they just stopped. This could be a normal adjustment as your system gets used to its new job. Cuffitis, from my understanding is usually accompanied by bleeding. Pouchitis is a whole different subject so i would not speculate as i have zero experience with it. Fissures can cause problems though. I am interested in what others think. Gary, Sounds like you may have cuffitis which is when the rectal cuff is inflamed. I experienced the same type of pain you had for quite awhile and was checked with an anal exam and really nothing was diagnosed at that time. It was not until I had a full pouchoscopy under anesthesia at the beginning of this month and a really good look at the cuff that I was diagnosed with cuffitis. I wish I pushed for this exam earlier as I suffered for a few months and I also was passing blood at the end (but not initially). I had pain and discomfort for awhile and since at that time there was no blood, I just chalked it up to normal recovery and healing also. If you have not already, insist on getting looked at by your surgeon.

Kjeane. I was scoped just before Christmas and was not diagnosed with cuffitus. I have a number of small fissures at the entrance which I'm working on, and they might go internal as well. Getting a Proctoscope in a couple of weeks hopefully when the external fissures are healed? I'm over having these painfully motions. I was on pentasa suppositories for a couple of weeks a little while ago, but they didn't resolve anything.
