I know I have seen some on here that ride a bike.....but I'm not sure if they have the jpouch or the ileostomy....etc....My question is..is it OK to be riding a bike with the jpouch? I have a fairly new bike that I never got to ride much before my surgeries....and I'd like to try it out, nothing overdoing.....just slowly around the development here...
I'm just worried if it can harm the pouch at all????? Probably a stupid question....but thought I'd ask???? Char......

Im no expert, but i dont see the harm in bike riding. Unless its one of those super skinny seats. If i sit too long my butt starts to hurt...so maybe with a bike seat it might get uncomfortable sooner?

My husband was an AVID cyclist before getting very sick and having his surgery (mountain and road). He was so depressed when we was too sick to ride. Well he was back on his bike not long after his colectomy (with the bag) and also after his takedown (j-pouch). Of course he doesn't go as far as he used to because he's not in as good of shape as he used to be, but he just did twenty-some miles today on his road bike. He has never had any problems due to having a jpouch. So as long as you didn't just have your surgery and are recovering, go get on that bike and have fun! It's important to try to live life as normally as you can. Enjoy!

Just wanted to add.... My husband tries not to eat prior to riding and takes some Imodium so he doesn't have to poop while on his bike, and also is careful to stay extra hydrated. Be careful with Gatorade though as the sugar can cause diarrhea, so he cuts the Gatorade with water.

Absolutely ride! I think riding is one of the best types of exercise you can do - good cardio workout and easy on the joints. I rode about 2000 miles with my ileo and have ridden about 1000 so far with my j-pouch. I can usually go about 40 miles without worrying about a bathroom stop. Sometimes I take Immodium, but not usually. I use Powerbar Endurance drink mix for hydration.
A fellow j-poucher that comes to this site occasionally just won 2nd place in the Tour of Ohio stage race!
My husband and I were avid mountain bikers and I had no problem with my j-pouch. We haven't done much riding at all because I had a baby six months ago, and now that I'm dying to get back on my bike again, it's just too hot here right now -- it was 110 degrees yesterday. We're really looking forward to getting back into it when the weather cools off.
To paraphrase Freddy Mercury, get on your bike and ride!

It is good to read the postive posts...I will be happy to get out riding soon....I can't take the hot weather so I'll only get out when it's cooler at night....then I won't worry about the dehydration factor! I plan on taking it slow going at first, because it's been so long! Thanks everyone! Char......

had the same question for my surgeon after TD. he told me to buy a good bike seat. now my only problem is a crappy bike. But as soon as I fix my latest flat, i'm going again.

I didn't know I should be concerned about riding. I go biking often with my children. It's not a long ride .. 3 to 4 miles but is there something I don't know about that should make be worry about doing this? I have had no adverse side effects and it seems that the I actually feel better after doing something physical.

Yes, the weather is great, that's why we moved here from Pittsburgh, lol! We love it, and as you know, there are plenty of places to ride here, and the weather is almost always cooperative. I cannot wait to get back to riding once the weather cools down. We are quite amateur in comparison to you, though!
As I'm sure you know, we get lots of people here for training, riding north on Oracle to the Catalina Mountains, and especially riding to and from Mt. Lemmon. Let me know if you ever ride in "The Tour de Tucson." We'll come out and cheer you on!
