Hi Wink

it's been a while... again, since i've been here, but you know how it is, when everything works, you kinda forget about the hardships....

my question totday is about kidneystones.

about a year after i was first diagnosed i had a bad runin with a kidneystone.... since i've had on and off kidney paine, that just fades on its own.... 1½ year ago i got my galdebladder removed, allso because of stones...

the last few months i've been having pain in the right side, just under my ribs, on and off... but i was kinda hoping it was just workpain, or a bad move on my part... living with the idea that when the colons's removed, no more kidneystones, even though i know thats ludachris....

so.... anyone here have this problem, on and off, with kidneystones??

my doc told me it's not that common, and he'd only seen 3 cases in the time he's been working with IBD....

Sabina,

Yes, an increase in the occurrence of kidney stones is common with IBD patients. The most common thought is that it has to do with the dehydration that IBD sufferers often live with (due to runny stool). I'm surprised your doctor told you it's not that common. There are a few discussions about the topic. Here's one:

Yep, Kidney stones are common with UC. I had them after my takedown, and still have them 10 years later. ElmerFudd's point captures it very well. I've been told that Prednisone is a factor as well.

I haven't taken prednisone that long.... all in all i was on it for about 4 months during the 3 years before i had my first operation....

about my doc and that he said it wasn't that common, maybe it has to do with the danish type food, or that we never really have it too hot here... today for example was one of the hottest days this year, and we only had about 29-30 degrees celsius....
i try to keep hydrated, but have a little problem with retaining water in my legs and feet, so it's a balanceact....

it's funny, but when i talk to other IBD patients here, they dont have kidneystones either.... some though get galdebladder stones, like me....

me doc coulden't tell me why i get the stones... i remember i was quite irritated with him when i had my first stone... and told him off, asking him why he hadn't told me about the risk...

and really, at this time, the kidneything is the only real reminder i have now, besides the runny stool Wink så maybe i shouldent complain and just accept the fact and remember to drink Wink

i just rememberd.... after i had the stone ( that resulted in one week in hospital on morfin Wink ) i allways said that the only man that had a clue about the pain of childbirth, is a man that had kidneystones Wink
the pain is SO similar, you have no idea....
