Just got back from the hospital last week, after my instestine decided to do the twist around some Scar tissue. I want to thank you all for helping my wife Kim get trough the ordeal while I was at Mt Sinai in New York. This board is such a comfort for those in need. My roomate while in the hospital was Joe_f and we were talking about JPouch.org and what a help it is. Even when you talk to the Doctor's they say "you mean that website with a that women Jan on there". Jan you are a blessing to us all! I am on the mend and very thankfull that I have such great surgeons like Dr. A Khanna(he did this operation), Dr. M Harris and Dr. S Gorefine, I would recommend them to everyone in need.

I had one question Dr. Khanna said when he operated on me he saw tons of scar tissue in there from my previous operation. I just wanted to know if that is normal for everyone who has had this surgery or am I just walking around waiting for my intestines to do the twist again?

Thank You All and God Bless!

Roberto

Everyone scars to a different degree. You are almost guaranteed to develop scar tissue / adhesions after surgery, but the degree varies by person. I have not heard an explanation as to why the difference in different people - but some can go through the exact same procedure and have very little scarring and others will have "tons."

When I had my adhesion removal surgery last year, my surgeon found 3 adhesions she needed to remove (that were constricting the intestines). She commented how happy she was with my surgery compared to a woman she had operated on the day before with "tons" of them she had to remove. She did comment too that her experience has been fewer adhesions with laproscopic surgery vs. open (though I have heard others say the opposite).

And yes, you may be walking around waiting for you intestines to twist again. Or, you may go the rest of your life without it happening again. No way to predict.

There is a very controversial product out there called Sepra Film and it is supposed to help keep adhesions at bay...You can read a lot about this stuff at (adhesions.org)My next surgery is going to have Sepra Film in it...It may only have a 20% chance of working but that's better than none!
Everybody forms some adhesions, it's part of the natural healing process..It's how big and/or where that gets us in trouble
