Hi

Is it possible to do an ileostomy without a full abdominal incision or laparotomy? My surgeon suggested an ileostomy might allow my pouch and muscles to rest since I had a pseudo one step surgery.

However, he does not perform laparoscopic surgeries, and I'm afraid of the recovery from my third straight laparotomy.

is it possible to make an ileostomy from the previous stoma site while avoiding a full incision?

An ileostomy does not require a large abdominal incision. They just make an incision large enough for the ileostomy, pull up the intestine and create the ileostomy in the same wound. I can't imagine what they would do with the laparoscope, unless it is to release adhesions.

Whether or not it could be done at the previous ostomy site depends on the condition of the abdominal wall there.

Take a deep breath and relax; this too will pass.
