Low FODMAP diet

Hi, has anybody heard of the above? Apparently this diet plan can dramatically reduce gas by cutting out poorly digested sugars such as Fructose.

FODMAP stands for Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides And Polyols. Those are the sugars which can cause excess gas in many people with dysfunctional digestive systems.

This is a relatively new idea which I've not heard of before, but it has been apparently very successful. I don't have a dietician, but has anyone had this suggested to them who has? And more to the point, has anyone tried it?

FODMAP has been brought up before but I don't remember who posted it. I've never tried it, gas doesn't seem to be a problem for me. However, if you are looking at reducing gas, give it a try and let us know your results.

Sugars interfere with the healthy balance of bacteria in you digestive system.

I avoid sugars and artificial sweeteners and it makes a big difference. Processed foods are packed with sugar.

Yes Markus, what you say is something along the lines of what I've been led to beleive in the past. However the Low FODMAP suggests that Glucose and Sucrose would not cause gas like the other sugars and would therefore be deemed acceptable if on this diet.

Think I'm gonna give this low FODMAP diet go! It caught my attention because I looked into it after I had problems after taking inulin as a fibre supplement - which is Fructo-oligosaccharide.

What I do is listen to my body, and adjust accordingly. Sugars in general feed the bad bacteria in our guts. Less sugar = less bad bacteria = less gas.

I also take a probiotic supplement to replace the healthy bacteria.

Markus, same here.

I'll come back and let everyone know how I got on with this plan.
