I have a quick question for you all, since I'm so new to this! I'll be 4 weeks post-takedown next Tuesday, and I'm going out with friends this weekend. Would it be ok to have a drink or is it too soon? And, if it's ok, what would be best? I'm not a big drinker, but I usually drank a couple of beers when I went out before my surgery. I'm just unsure if that would be ok given the carbonation. I don't seem to have a problem with soda, and I also seem to be doing ok with my output (I'm taking liquid Metamucil to firm things up).

I'd appreciate any input!

Terri

I've had both beer and wine soon after takedown and have been fine. I'd take a "test run" at home before you go out to see how it will affect you, since you don't want to ruin your night out. Don't overdo it when you're out!

I seem to question the effects of alcohol on my j pouch, but it may have been the nachos I had with it!

One should be fine, but it will make things watery.

Terri, You wont do any damage to yourself as far as having a pouch. With that said 4 weeks is early to try a drink in my opinion but take a drink at home like arizonafour suggested so you know what to expect. Scott Mc

My J-pouch going ton 5 years + post takedown loves wine and/or gin martinis--two olives. No problem on this end for me! I'm rather a purist when it comes to drinks so I don't add sugary mixes, etc. Maybe that's the difference!

I'd recommend starting slow. Maybe have a test drink at home to try things out. I was really concerned and convinced that alcohol was just going to go straight through me and cause a problem - but I was pleasantly surprised in that it was totally fine! I usually have wine or vodka/water. And I waited 8 wks after takedown, not sure if that had anything to do with it. Good luck Smiler

I'll walk this winding road into the great unknown.

You've had some good advice about test driving the beer at home first. However, if you are taking any pain meds I would be very careful as it could excellerate the effects of the alcohol.

Cheers! D-| Smiler

Thanks for the advice, guys! I had one beer on Saturday night, and except for a little more gas than usual, it was fine. I feel a little more full than usual, but could have been my dinner, too (I was so happy to be out to dinner, that I think I ate a little too much)!

Hi, Terri.

I remember asking my surgeon upon my release from the hospital if it was okay to have a beer to celebrate. He replied that after everything that I had gone through, I should have two or three!

Nowm that's the type of medical advice I like to receive!

I'll have a micro brew every now and then or a White Russain. I also have PSC, so I have to limit my booze. I hit it pretty hard from 19 to 29 anyway.....
