I'm posting this for Jason....
Question for everyone that has used these two meds together. I have had Pouchitis 3 times in the last 1 1/2 months and take 500Mg Cipro for it. It seems to be working great (until I go off of it and then it comes back ) and no issues taking it. However, I never knew I had pouchitis but I get scoped every 2 months for dysplasia cells in the cuff and they found it. My doctor is going to get me down to 250mg and keep me on that as a maint. level. Now, I have cuffitis I was told last week (thought I did over the last few weeks I have some real interesting spasms and bleeding) Went for a scope last thurs and he told me there is still a mild case of pouchitis in there and my cuff is quite inflamed - He put me on Rowasa 1000mg ( Suppositorys) for 15 days then 500 mg for 15 days and then a scope. Unlike pouchitis, I KNEW SOMETHING WAS WORNG WITH CUFF. So, my question - Anyone have a simular experience like this and the results of taking these meds together and over a long time. And also, with dysplasia cells in the cuff (and I had them Med/ high throughout the colon/large intest before the operation; however, never knew it till after they sent it all out) is there a greater risk to having them develop more with the inflamation? Thanks Jason I will add this - I am still only going 4 times a day, eating what I want and felling great (besides the spasms) SO I DONT REGRET MY POUCH AT ALL! ________________________________________ |

I have intermittent pouchitis and chronic cuffitis. For the cuffitis I took the mesalamine suppositories for a few months, then switched to Azulfidine orally as maintenance. Generally, all of the 5-ASA drugs are plenty safe long term (Azulfidine does have a risk for liver damage, but that occurs early in the treatment course).
I have not had to take long term antibiotics for pouchitis--yet. But taking them together should not be an issue. Jan Take a deep breath and relax; this too will pass. |

Jan,
Thanks for the info. Its been one week and I feel 100% perfect. Better then ever taking these 2 things. I think more of the problem was the cuff issue, but since the 1000mg of Rowasa I feel wonderful. Jan, I am done with them on March 21 when I go back in for another scope. If I feel this good and he pulls me off them, should he or will he then go to pills to maintain or do you think the protocall is to wait and see if the issue comes back again! I went down to 250 mg of cipro for the Pouchitis issue and all seems well with that (though it didnt bother me the cuff was killing me) Thanks Jan Jason - Pa statie7104@yahoo.com Step 1 Jan 06 Step 2 March 06 Spleen & Gallbladder June 06 Pouch Disconnect / End Illeo May 07 |
