Im trying to get some kind of excitement about me to get through this next month before takedown and one of the things Ive been wondering about is sushi. I used to LOVE sushi trains. If I was going to try this again,I would definitely make sure the restauarnt was VERY reputable and the raw stuff is only a very small portion of what I like to eat at sushi restaurants so I could stear clear of that but should I avoid it entirely. The small amount of info Ive found on the net is that it can set off chronic pouchitis. Is it still too risky to eat the cooked sushi because its prepared so close to the raw stuff? Obviously I would give it up if it wasnt a good idea but it would be something I would miss very much.

I've eaten tons and tons of sushi without issues. If anything it's the veggies/seaweed that cause irritation. Never had problems eating raw seafood.

Hi jbear, Chronic pouchitis? No way! The only thing you'll have to worry about if you eat sushi is butt burn. Sushi is very healthy and should be fine after a couple of months. Spicy anything will give you problems, but rice, fish and everything else in sushi is good for you (except wasabi and spicy sauces on top) . Of course, everyone is different but I have had no problems eating sushi and I had it a month after takedown. You'll never go wrong eating bland, healthy and easily digestible foods at first. Healthy foods = healthy bodies! Keep asking questions though because there is a lot of wisdom here. Many blessings to you, Rich

I don't even chew that well and am OK. Jan Take a deep breath and relax; this too will pass.
|
Absolutely. I'm with Jan in that I don't even chew it that much; I find it sort of just melts in your mouth (except for maybe the octopus...lol). Besides, the rice is good for gumming things up. worried, you can always carry some Immodium with you as a back-up. I eat it all the time. In fact, my favourite food. Never had any issue with it. The one food that sometimes does cause me a problem is Chinese vegetables, so I'm careful when going for Chinese take away or buffet. But no problems with the sushi. I have dined on sushi regularly for many years before and after J Pouch surgery and never had a problem, not once. There is a sushi place at Grand Central Station in New York City which I always stop at if I am eating on the run or need to take some food onto the train for the ride back to Connecticut. I forget the name of the place (begins with an M) but they make gargantuan Futomaki rolls that I can barely fit in my mouth in one bite. If I tried to take 3 chews and a swallow I would almost certainly start choking and someone would need to perform the Heimlich maneuver to save me. So I chew those babies slowly and carefully. The enormous size of those rolls makes them a real challenge. I do have a favorite sushi restaurant here in Connecticut and they make just about everything that one can order. It's all good and their Futomaki rolls are also big although not the same size as those monster rolls at Grand Central Station. Chewing is less of an issue. I also like the seaweed salad. I forget what the Japanese name for it is but it comes in raw and cooked or fermented versions. I like both. It's all good! I eat sushi all the time. I do have to be careful when eating too much edamome, if I don't chew it REALLY well, it is pretty much unchanged on the tail end (pun intended). TX Foodie: I only eat the unshelled edamame (suck them out of the shells at restaurants or buy the unshelled version in stores). I am not sure if you eat them whole in the husks, but I would think that could be a serious issue. I really do like the salted unshelled edamame. All they are is boiled salted soybeans. I think you can also get a fermented version. Bon appetit! (not sure of the Japanese translation on that????????) Whatever you do, make sure that you eat your sushi at a well known place that always makes it fresh...food poisioning and pouches make for a really nasty date. Sharon It could be worse...oh, wait..it already has been! then I guess it can only get better from here....

Ahhh.....if you knew "Sushi" like I knew "Sushi"....

I eat it all the time too, cooked and raw. In fact, I'm having sushi for dinner tonight! Enjoy!
