Would anyone have an idea why my vitiman D levels are low? I have my pouch for 8 years now and this is the first. I take muliti vitimins plus extra calicium with D for my osteoporisis.
I am also just coming out of a pouchitis flare up. Thanks Susan "True stlye is about living passionately" |

Ally,
Mine is VERY low too. I have been trying to build it back up since December but I am getting no where. My GYN is the doctor that has been ordering these blood tests and he feels I am not absorbing my dietary vitamin D and he blames inflammation. Right now he has me taking 2000 units a day along with my calium with D and what is in my multi vitamin. He also prescribed thyroid medicine and my TSH number is still climbing so he increased that dosage and again he blamed inflammation. I saw my gastroenteroloist last week. I asked him about all of this. He suggested I see an endocrinologist. He didn't explain why. He just said it wasn't his area. Sorry, I can't help you on this one Ally. If any one knows why, I too would love to hear from you. In the meantime, I am trying to get as much sun as I can with out going out and getting naked!!! |

This new study indicates that vitamin D deficiency is a result of the various associated diseases, not a cause, and supplementation may make it worse. Sort of a contradictory notion to the conventional wisdom, but it does make some sense when you read the article. Maybe the answer is a little more sun exposure...

You can count me in as being seemingly chronically low on Vit D. My first Vit D labs were done in March of 2007. I supplemented with 1000 to 1200 IU of Vit D3 daily. A year later, when tested, were actually slightly lower. I continue to supplement. My current abx protocol discourages me from spending much time out in the sun, however I agree that the sun is the best place to get your Vit D. I continue to follow this Vit D argument with great interest. However, I desire to see some other studies from leading researchers throughout the globe or the medical community. I'm not terribly confident in "Dr." Marshall's background regarding this subject. Information About Trevor Marshall, Ph.D

Good point indeed about this guy. Seems like he has a few skeletons in his closet, but he has published in respected medical journals. Still, not enough evidence there to change current treatment standards, but something new to consider. What is becoming more and more clear is that vitamin D is more important to overall health than just for the bones. But, the details just have not been hammered out yet.
