i had my ilio reversed in 2002, weight was okay for awhile and then when i started to eat more
i gained weight very easily. i was told my metabolism was messed up. when sick body holds onto calories and then you get better and the body does not know what to do.
i still have restrictive diet. i was eating carbs, i tried fresh fruits and veggies and no luck.
then in the past 6 months they have noticed my sugar get a little crazy- its not over 200 but i was put on glocophage and a water pill
and i test 4 times a day
i have sunk into a funk i am so sick and tired of having something wrong with me. i had uc since i was 15 i will be 40 in 6 months.
i went to a dietician who has uc, but not much help.

i have to watch the fiber and veggies and fruit

i wish someone with a j pouch lived near me.
these docs dont know what to do- a jpouch with sugar?????
i hate needles and keep crying when no one is around i am sick of docs and people telling what to eat unless you have a jpouch you dont understand
and i dont feel like going to see a counselor- i did and they dont know they are not a poucher
or even know what it is.
is anyone from new jersey? i would like to meet and talk to a poucher.

does anyone have a sugar problem- i desparately need advise.

only lite is that doc feels if weight comes off symptoms will go away
lost 8 pounds in 2 weeks
sorry for the lon post, but i really need this community now. my family does not get it
but i believe my"jpoucher family" will get me.
i hope somoone can respond

Hi that is bad luck. I know a couple of diabetics though he seem to live very full lives without their illness impeding them the way UC can. One is a successful lawyer in my firm and the other is a very strong competitive swimmer in my swimming club. There's also a English athlete who's won gold at rowing in the olympics several times who has both UC and diabetes.

As far as compatibility with a j-pouch goes, I'm sure this is something you can manage. It's not difficult to remove simple sugars from your diet and I'm sure you can find some diabetes-friendly foods that are also compatible with your pouch, even if it requires a bit of experimentation. In fact, some people have posted that a higher fibre diet actually improves their pouch function.

I am actually a Customer Service Officer for the Diabetes Assoc here in Western Australia. If you send me a list of specific questions to shaz@ostomates.org I'll speak to some of the educators/dietiticians here at the assoc (One of whom actually has UC, another has a hubby with Crohns) and see what I can find out for you.

My husband has type 2 diabetes (like you) and I am prediabetic. My husband also has UC, but still has his colon and as you know, I have a j-pouch.

This is really not a big deal (unless of course you decide to ignore it). A diabetic diet is not much different than any other diet. It is not about sugar, but about carbohydrates. You do not need to eliminate carbs, but just be aware of what you are eating. The idea is to limit your consumption of carbs, particularly those that increase your blood sugar faster. This would be sugars and starches. Increasing your fiber (which are carbohydrates that are not digested) helps lower your blood sugar overall by filling you up without increasing the carbohydrate load. Your diet should be more focused on protein sources (meat, eggs, cheese, dairy) and fruits and vegetables, and modest servings of carbohydrates.

This type of diet is basically what we should all be eating, so it should not be a big struggle. Also, another way to reduce your insulin resistance is to loose weight and/or increase your activity level. Excercise directly reduces your insulin needs. Again, this is something that is healthful for anyone, not just a diabetic. I see that you say you need to watch the fiber, veggies and fruit and I think that may be a problem for you. Often we exclude a wide variety of foods from our diet when we really don't need to. I find that there are only a very few fruits or vegetables that really cause me problems (in that they increase the diarrhea). I don't even exclude them because I have just learned to anticipate the diarrhea, and adjust accordingly. Fiber should not make things worse for you (such as beans and whole grains, bananas, etc.). It is a matter of knowing which kinds of fiber your foods contain. Perhaps your adaptation to your pouch has not been good, I don't know, but I am sure there is a way around this.

Glucophage is a first line medication that does not alter your insulin production so there is no risk of hypoglycemia with it. I know it can be depressing to think you have another disease, but you are in very good company. This is a link to the American Diabetes Association. if it makes you feel any better, i am a diabetic too! my takedown is in two weeks and i've dealt with it with my ostomy just fine..just have to make adjustments

thank you for your replies and i may be emailing australia some questions. my problem which i should have said, is that unlike some people, i cant tolerate the good food, like salad( i tried and even tried to ignore the diarrhea- but it was too painful and i feel like ant in the behind. like my gastro said, the food does not break down- like last nite i ate 12 well cooked green beans, about an hour later in the bathroom and the beans did not break down and there is a bile like fluid.- sorry to be graphic. then the pain is so bad.
i just wish i knew what to eat.

Just remember that fiber does not mean just fruits and vegetables. It does make it easier if you can eat fruits and vegetables, but if you can't, you can't. Again, have the bulk of your calories in protein and lighter on the carbs. And since you can't eat those veggies, concentrate on getting more soluble fiber in your diet, like beans whole grains (like oatmeal, whole wheat, brown rice, bran, etc). You may also want to consider something that binds with the bile, like Questran or Cholestid. You may find that it helps you in the output department.

I was recently diagnosed with Diabetes 2. Am taking Metformin (Glucophage) and Januvia in an effort to bring my fasting blood sugar (first thing in the a.m.) down. I bought a book which has the glycimic index in it. Almost every food is listed. I eat just about everything and enjoy a daily martini, as well. For the most part, I try to eat lower numbered glycemic index foods. I have found this works well for me because of the huge variety of foods with low glycemic index numbers. So far, so good! Actually, the foods I'm now eating are healthier for me. Fortunately, my J-pouch has yet to find a food it doesn't like. Best wishes.
