My take down is in a month, and I am getting a little overly paranoid about what it's like to go regularly again. Especially the "first" BM...

For anyone who has been there, what happens, what is that first BM like? Did you know you had to go? Did you make it to the bathroom? Did it hurt?

You'd think after UC, I'd be a pro, but after a year with an ostomy, I'm freaked about going the regular way!

I am so happy for you. I remember practically bouncing off the walls ready for takedown! I hope you have a wonderfully easy transition.

I felt a ton of gas pressure in my gut (it hurt to laugh it was so much)Walking helped. I slightly layed on my left side and was able to release some gas that way. Then soon after I just felt the urge to go.
For me it wasn't painful. The first one was mucus plug like, then the next were all liquid.
I was prepared with extra soft tp, wipes and cream but honestly the burn didn't set in until a few days later... at home.
I knew I could hold it even during the 1 hr crazy Philly I-95 traffic.

You will do great!

Hi,

Oh, no worries, you'll love pooping again, especially when you realize your whole stay in the hospital this time is waiting on you pooping.

Here is my photo blog, but in it I talk about how my BMs, skin, food happened during my hospital stay:

I had my take down 2 1/2 weeks ago-my first BM was no problem-came out easily and in liquid form-no discomfort. Unfortunately, for the next 12 hours I went about every 10-15 minutes! It finally eased up-got some immodium and metamucil in my system which helped things a lot! Good luck to you!

Try pulling your anal tube out and then having to have your first poo after takedown Eeker. That is what happened to me.My nurse was giving me my nightly sponge bath, I think it was the fourth day after the surgery, she told me to pull my self up a bit in my bed.Little did I or she know that my foot was on the tube so that when I pulled up the tube was too short and stayed where it was causing it to be ripped not pulled but ripped violently out of my bum Eeker Eeker Eeker talk about pain! After recovering from that ordeal I was petrified to have my first BM seeing they did not reinsert the tube.Sure enough within 10 minutes of pulling the tube out I had to go.Here is the best part of a bad situation it didn`t hurt at all it felt like normal to go.So I wouldn`t think that much about it or get myself all worked up.I`m sure you`ll be fine seeing you`ll hopefully be going about it the normal way without any complications.I hope I put your mind at ease a bit.Good luck with the pooing! Wink

It's not the first after takedown that I recall so much as the 1000-2000 after butt-burn. I'm three weeks on the other side of takedown and if it werent for burning/itching sensation in bum, things would be great!

Ask your Dr. for preventative measures to the burning sensation that is sure come with high volume liquid output. I think if I had known this beforehand, I may have been able to prevent it.

Good luck to you and keep in mind it does get easier a little tiny bit each day.

I'm 2 weeks post-takedown, and my output is still fairly soft. I'm experimenting with Metamucil to absorb fluid and bulk things up a bit, slow them down.

The first one wasn't bad. It happened in the hospital about 36 hours after surgery. Just some slight pressure "down there" and I went.

It is different than going with a colon, but that's all, just different, not bad. Takes some getting used to, but I'm willing to do that if it means NO MORE COLITIS! Yay!

Diagnosed with Chronic Ulcerative Colitis in 1986.
