I've had my pouch for almost three years. The last few days is like a flashback to colitis. A lot of PAIN, cramping and urgency. I'm in the bathroom constantly and not much is coming out, but the cramps and urgency wont let up. (I've got butt pain and hemerroids that are making this unbearable.) This morning I ate very little and it was a little better. But a few minutes ago I had a tiny bite of sliced turkey and it sent me right into the bathroom. It's just like a bad flare up of colitis! (without the blood)
I also don't have fever, chills or nausea. It's all below the waist. Can this be pouchitis? I've never had it before. Pleeeeease help!!!!! Thanks!!! |

Hi Jody, It is possible that you are having a bout of pouchitis, but you really need to see your Dr. and have him do a scope so it can be diagnosed properly. Usually some antibiotics will fix it up pretty fast.
Don't wait to call, if it is pouchitis it usually doesn't get better by itself. Best wishes, Craig |

I have had my pouch 19 years and have never had pouchitis. It sounds like a partial blockage. What have you eaten? Have you taken anything, pills, vitamins, anything different? Go to clear liquids for a bit and see if that clears it. |

I'm still pooping a lot (very watery) and passing a lot of gas, so I don't think I'm blocked. Just a bite of food triggers the urge to go to the bathroom.
The only thing I ate or drank different was Paradise iced tea! A few days ago I made a whole pitcher of it and I used a bit of equal. Could that have triggered this?!! I haven't had any iced tea today and I'm feeling no relief. This sucks! I can't afford to lose any weight. |

It sure can be pouchitis. Usually, the doc can diagnose over the phone by symptoms alone and call in some antibiotics for you. If they don't turn things around in 2-3 days, then you probably need reevaluation. Typically, they don't scope right off the bat, only for recurrent or chronic cases.
I really doubt that this was related to your iced tea. If it is diet related, it is more likely food poisoning. If you begin vomiting and cannot keep liquids down, you'll probably have to go to the ER for IV fluids. In the meantime, take some Pepto Bismol (tablets or liquid), and switch to the easy-on-the-tummy diet (toast, bananas, rice, applesauce- no dairy or coarse foods)--liquid diet if necessary.
