I don't currenty have any problems with anemia, but I was wondering if it would be safe to take an iron supplement? "Normal" people get constipated when they take it, would that mean I could get some slow down with it?

I'd honestly talk to your GP first. Excess, unwarranted iron intake can build up in the body's tissues, and I believe have been associated with heart disease and cancer.

I agree that you should see your doctor before taken iron supplements. I have my blood done regularly since I was diagnosed with UC and sometimes I have to take the iron and other times I am okay but it's always under a doctors supervision.

Taking supplemental iron when you do not need to can lead to build up in the body, particularly the liver and cause liver damage. Excess unabsorbed iron can also feed pathogenic bacteria or cancer cells. Don't do it without a doctor's supervision. Just because you can buy something over the counter, it does not mean you can take it without risk.

However, the amount of iron in multivitamins is fine for children, premenopausal women and young men.

Not likely. It is probably genetic in your case.

It is called hemochromatosis and it is basically inherited iron overload disorder.
