I know I've seen a few people from Kansas city area around the site. I was just wondering what hospital they went to and if they ever had stricture dilations done or know of doctors that do them. I'm actually from Jefferson City but I've had too dilations done at Cleveland Clinic and just recently had one done in Jeff City but the doctor doesn't do many of them on people with pouches and I think felt a little uncomfortable doing it.

Mark, check out the website above. That is the website for my doctors. Lina O'Brien did my surgery and is the best in the area. I guarantee you will love her.

Oh - and the hospitals they work are St. Josephs (Overland Park area - in Missouri) and St. Lukes (Plaza area).

Thanks Holly for the site info. And Elmer do you know if they do stricture dilations. I know surgeons sometimes do them, but the three times I've had it done was with a GI. Don't know if surgeons would do dilations or not. And do you have a GI that you see Elmer?

Dr. O'Brien has done all of my follow up. She says she only refers out to a GI if there is a chronic issue like chronic pouchitis. So yes, I believe she would do a dilation if you needed one.

If you are looking for a good GI in the area, I saw quite a few at St. Lukes while I was there. I really liked:

Dr. J. Edward McCullough
Midamerica Gastrointestinal
4321 Washington St. Ste 5600
Kansas City, MO 64111
816-561-2000

Others in the practice:
Dr. Allen (did a scope - otherwise I don't know him)
Dr. Culver (was my regular GI doc - very smart and a good doc)
Dr. Helzberg (good doc, not much for a bedside manner)

I'm basically looking for someone in the area that does a lot of dilations and is comfortable doing them. I've had two done by Dr. Shen and I would ask him to recommend someone in the area, but I think he likes to do them himself. Because last time I asked if I could have my local GI do it, he was basically like just come up here and I'll do it. Kind of like he didn't want anyone else to mess it up. My local GI is worried that the longer you get away from the surgery he says the greater chance of perforation when trying to dilate the stricture. So instead of dilating to 18mm which is what Dr. Shen did he only went to 15mm and I don't think it helped much.

Mark,

Call Dr. O'Brien's office and ask to talk to Katie (that's her nurse). If you call in, just hit '0' to get an operator. If Katie's not there, leave a voicemail. She's good about getting back to you. Just explain the situation and see if she'll take you on and do the dilation.

My experience is that she is meticulous and very cautious. She is paranoid too about people messing up her handiwork and would be very careful not to do that while dilating you.
