I was in the hospital about a week for step 2 and the same for step 3. My doctor was very cautious and had me take everything very slowly...liquids for a few days and then slowly added more solid foods. It was a longer process, but worked well for me!

I had UC for 7 years, and have been reading this site since Feb. of this year after I decided to have the J-pouch surgery. I am curious to find out what most of you are calling step 1, whereas I only have had what you are calling step 2 and 3.

My first surgery was April 5, 2007 and I was in the hospital for 6 day's, wore the bag for 3 months and had what you are calling the take down on Monday July 9th(yesterday).

I came home late this afternoon, only one day after the surgery. I feel that I have been really blessed with a very smooth recovery so far. After reading so many things about the BUTT BURN I thought for sure it was going to be horrible, but so far nothing like that has happened yet. Is this common or has the storm just not hit me yet?

I have my 1st child due in about 3 weeks so I am hoping for the best for recovery. So far so good. This site has been very helpful and I am looking forward to seeing how everyone recovers from these operations.

Kinetic703,

So your removal of colon and jpouch creation were done on seperate operations?

I was pretty much in bed for 2-3 weeks after the 1st surgery, and went back to work in about 6-7 weeks. Like I said I just got home from the 2nd surgery, they told me about a month of time off of work and no lifting of 20 pounds. It's 3:30 and I just woke up after 2hrs of sleep and was freezing cold and shaking but still no BUTT BURN. Thanks for the info.

I had my rectum removed due to rectal cancer on June 6th. At the same time my surgeon created a j-pouch and a temporary ileostomy. I was in the hospital for 7 days. I didn't even have an appetite for the first day and became neauseous for the next 4 days. I was put on a liquid diet for the first few days in the hospital and then attempted a soft food diet. It was hard to keep anything down. i was give antinausea meds that helped a lot. Then the day before I was released, my tummy began to feel better and was able to eat a little more. To my surgeon's surproze, I wasn't in much pain, especially with all the work that was done down there.
