I am 23 years old boy. I born with hole in my Heart (VSD) and when I was 10 years old in September 1994 operation/open heart surgery for VSD closure is done. I have been living the normal life and not taking any medicine. we have done check up and the report was normal. my question is will i be normal whole life? Currently i can do every thing like normal person, i can run, i can play cricket etc... Please let me know Is there still any risk in my future life? My weight has been increased because i am working in night shift. currently i am 77kg and 6 ft. tall. i want to reduce my weight, but I am worried to do excercise, Yoga or pranayam. please let me know what is best for me i mean can i do Yoga or pranayam. please advice me friends. thanks in advance.

My first surgical consult was due to my GI's urging to have the surgery. He said eventually my UC would turn to cancer. I elected not to have the surgery since the surgeon did not make it sound urgent and I had two small kids.

Five years later, the UC did turn to cancer as my GI had suspected and then the decision was forced. In hindsight, I wish I had listened to my GI the first time!!

randall, I'm not sure I understand your question. It sounds like you are asking about some kind of heart surgery. You are posting on a board for people with (or considering getting) a J-pouch, which is intestinal-related surgery. Are you sure you're on the right board?

Also, I don't know what pranayam is.

Randall, sorry you have had such a rough childhood with all these things going on. I see from your profile that you have Crohn's, not UC, so I am presuming you are not asking about j-pouch surgery, since Crohn's is generally a contraindication for it.

Weight loss is one of the primary issues with Crohn's and the way to manage it is by control of the disease itself. That can be a tall order for many people. But it seems that you want to lose weight, not gain or maintain your weight. So, you are lucky in that department. Basically, you can lose weight the same way anyone does. Eat less and exercise more.

The fact that you had a ventricular septal defect as an infant is of little consequence. Once the defect is repaired, you should be able to do whatever anyone else does. The only reason you might have a different activity restriction is if you have pulmonary hypertension, and your cardiologist would have told you if this were the case.

Anyway, you should be fine. However, you should just contact your doctor before engaging in a rigorous program, just to be sure.

Good luck to you.

Take a deep breath and relax; this too will pass.

rockandroller,

Pranayama is breath practice, as in yoga.

I battled with the disease for six years with a brief period of remission. I've tried almost every drug available with the exception of 6MP with no success and long term risks associated with the types of drugs I was receiving. My quality of life has significantly deteriorated. I can no longer exercise like I want to, eat solid foods without pain, or do things with friends and family. Sleepless nights, pain, and urgency are topped off by the fact that my wife and I are expecting our first child and I do not want to be limited or deprive my son of a active life because of my limitations. That's why I'm having surgery in 3 weeks and looking forward to it.

I wanted to wait until summer, it was Feb. Doctor said I would not make it and it would be an emergency surgery, which he did not want the other issues that presented. So I opted for spring break. I am glad I did not wait. I was feeling better after a week.
