Has anyone experienced muscle spasms below the j-pouch (and maybe some in the j-pouch itself)? It hurts especially if you have gas or have to 'go'. I have repeated 'roids and fissures from it.
My surgeon said he wasn't familiar with any anti-spasmotic meds for this. I did find one drug that was new on the market called 'Symax' for the digestion tract; but it's time released which may not work for those of us with no colon. These are Has anyone had these spasms and been prescribed something that worked? I am trying herbs for it right now, but they aren't working at this point. Thanks in advance for any help with this. |

There is a drug here call Spasphone Lyoc (or something like that) if you have it looked up in a pharmacology book they may be able to find it for you..it disolves under the tounge and is easy for us to use...yes..I used to have the spasms...and they prescribed it everytime..
Sharon It could be worse...oh, wait..it already has been! then I guess it can only get better from here.... |

There are lots of antispasmotics out there. The most typically prescribed are Bentyl or Levsin. Those who get no relief from these seem to get some help with the muscle relaxing properties of Valium or Flexeril. It is sort of hit and miss as to what will work for you.
Jan Take a deep breath and relax; this too will pass. |

Thank you thank you thank you! My surgeon still has no idea what these 'spasms' are I speak of or what to do about them.
So with your all's help, I just called my regular doc and said I needed some Bentyl for my spasms and viola, they were called in and I've started on them. (The other drugs listed here will be next to try if the Bentyl doesn't work.) Thank you, you saved my life! |

I get them too!!! There's Librax which may help a little. I've been putting calmoseptine a little ways up the hole to help with the irritation. I get the same exact thing. The pain is very intense. Sometimes it gets pretty bad before bed so I have to take a pain med. I think it's from going alot throughout the day. The irritation inside also causes the muscles to contract/lock up. Send me a PM if you wanna talk more. I feel you totally.

Would B&O Suppositories help? It would also deliver the med locally directly to the area.

I have been on Bentyl for a day now and I feel like it's night and day difference. I feel so much better! The spasms have stopped. I back the Bentyl (2 caps four times a day) up with two Valium a day and I feel great.
I wanted to thank Jan and the others on the board for all their help and suggestions. I may be looking for a new drug if this quits working, or someone else may stop by and see the excellent suggestions here. No one should have to live in this kind of pain. I can tell the bleeding from the fissures or 'roids is already healing without the painful spasms and I now have hope for the future. I do have to add I am disappointed in the doctors in this area. Everthing I've ever visited my gastro for from fissures to 'roids says 'oh, mmm, I don't know anything about that'. He actually suggested I go to a dermatologist. Meanwhile, since I am fourteen monhts out from my colectomy surgery, my surgeon has really lost interest and said he just doesn't know what is wrong and had never heard of 'spasms'. Again, thank God for this board, Jan, and the wealth of life saving knowledge here that hopefully others with the same problem can fine useful. |

My doc says my spasms are from too much straining during the day. Sometimes I have to strain hard because I don't have the luxury of time to sit during work hours.
Pain meds help when they get too painful. David |

ajpops: I'm in the Charlotte area. I would go to UNC Chapel Hill and recommend Drs Koruda and Sadiq for surgery and Dr Isaacs for a gastro, because I've heard good things about them.
As far as straining Indy_Dave, do you maybe have too much fiber or anti diarrheal in your system? Ever since I was diagnosed with UC and even after the surgery (a total of about 6 years), I've always had what most people would refer to as diarrhea or very soft stools. Do you have spasms after a 'sitting' shall we say? If so, those could probably be gotten under control with an anti spasmotic like Bentyl. I was at that doc today, I was started out on 20 mg four times a day and felt I needed to go higher to stop all lingering spasms. I'm on 30 mg four times a day now and it is feeling like night and day from pre Bentyl to post Bentyl to me. I can still go up to 40 mg four times a day if I absolutely have to, but that is the very upper safe dose, so I hope I can stay right here at 30 mg. Thanks again Jan, God bless you. |
