After having my J pouch since 1992 and having one other bowel obstruction I had another obstruction that lead me back to the doctor. She admitted me immediately and had to do the full surgery. My ovary was imbedding into my j pouch and after 6 hours of being in surgery I woke up with an ostomy. She debated weather or not to take out my j pouch all together but after consideration she detached my ovary but tore the pouch in the process. She repaired it the best she could.
This was a month ago and I'm on my third trip back to the hospital. The second trip was because I was having pain and after a cat scan they found fluid in my pelvic area. They had to place a drain in. They discovered that there is a leak in my pouch still. This is not good. We were hoping to reconnect everything after three months...but now it's all up in the air. I am so afraid that they won't be able to reconnect things. If the leak doesn't heal on it's own then it's either another big surgery or a permanent ostomy. I'm scared. I know it's a long shot, but has anyone experienced anything like this. Can a hole like this heal on it's own? I've talked to a few surgeons at the Cleveland Clinic and one said it should heal on it's own and the other didn't think so. What next??! |

Hi,
I'm so sorry for what you are going through. I'm sorry I have no advice for you but wanted to respond. I hope you can get some other experienced advice. I hope the leak within the J-pouch will heal, I suppose it is still early and there is a chance. Take one day at a time and rest as much as possible, you really need good rest so that your body can repair itself as much as possible!! Small leaks sometimes heal without surgery, but I think the bigger the tear and the longer it goes without healing, the smaller the chances are that it will heal on its own. After Thomas' first pouch ruptured (at the upper end, from steroid-impaired healing, three days post-surgery) we waited three months in the hospital for it to heal. All the while, he was up and down with fevers and fluid collections, having periodic drainage procedures and being treated with antibiotics. When they finally went in a third time, the pouch was found to be unsalvageable. Fortunately they were able to create an entirely new one without significant loss of additional bowel.
