I just had my second surgery on 8/30. My final take down is scheduled for sometime in August. Right now whenever I urinate, I have to do it sitting down because I'm getting a discharge from my rectum. Is this common?... and if so, is it going to end? Please let me know. Thanks.

Eric,

It is normal. You will have some discharge from your bottom end even with the loop ileo. Sometimes it will also seep out because the mucous in the pouch is very slippery.

I had a very similar situation inbetween my surgery 1 and 2.

Eric,
I'm afraid that it won't end. I had surgery 1 (of 2) in august and will have the 2nd surgery in june. I have discharge too. It's very common. I hold it in all day and let it come out at night before bed. I use it to my advantage to strengthen my kegel muscles (much like the kegel exersizes). You'll get used to it. Good luck!

Eric, I had #1 surgery (ileostomy) in june o5 and then the take down August, 24, 05. I am still experiencing anal leakage. I think it is different for everyone. Some never have a problem. according to my doctor, 20% of people with j-pouch can experience leakage long term. I think that I might be one of those. It has become tollerable for me though. I have it somewhat under control, with metimucil and imodium and diet, of course. My behind was getting pretty beat up from trips to the bathroom and the leaking. He told me to use Calmoseptine regularly and stuff a stretched out cotton ball in my behind to catch leakage. I was using TP and he said that is too rough. I was actually amazed with the comfortable feeling of the cotton ball vs. the toilet paper. I do not leak at night but I have trouble during the day and as you say whenever I urinate. My j-pouch is not perfect but I still have to admit that I sure feel better than when I had UC. Good luck and keep up the dialogue with your doctor. I understand that is not always easy. I had to change doctors in order to get some information. Hang in there. Sarah

Thank you Jason and Sarah-

You're right, it definitely beats the pain and agony associated with this disease. Good luck to you too. Eric

Thank you Kodigirl for the cotton ball tip. I've been using tp on occasion. My take down was in Jan., 2007.

My amount and frequency of my leakage has decreased significantly since my skin tag has decreased in size (they say by about 40%) and my Dr. has prescribed tincture of opium (that slowed everthing to a crawl), and I increased my fiber intake substanially, naturally, not by a supplement. Is one better that the other? I don't leak when I'm lying down and rarely when I'm sitting down, but, as soon as I get up to move the leakage occurs, and it burns. For some reason, the anal leakage occurs most frequently from about 4:00PM to 8:00PM daily. That is always the worst time. Any Ideas?

Thanks in advance & Good Luck!!!!

Tony, what is a skin tag that you have referred to? and isn't tinture of opium heavy duty stuff? I have read about others using it. I think that I eat a lot of natural fiber too but it never seems enough. The metimucil works the BEST for me. wouldn't metimucil be better than t. of O.? or is that prescribed when NOTHING else works? glad the cotton ball idea has helped you, I am so glad that this new doctor told me about it as the TP was really quite uncomfortable at times. best to you all. Sarah

Sorry it's taken a while to get back to you. I'm relatively new to this website and having trouble keeping up all the topics.

The skin tag is similar to a hemmorhoid in an identical position. The opium slows everything up and should reduce the number of times that I have a BM. I really don't fell any effects from the opium, or it could be that I can't tell. Prior to the opium I was on pain medication for months.
