Hello. I just had the first part of my surgery done on Aug 18th and was in the hospital for another week or more due to fever ect. But my question is how long should it hurt to swallow food and liquids afterwards? My DR said it had to do with something in my chest moving but it really makes me not want to eat. What can I do?

Sometimes the tubes used during anaesthia can give you a mighty sore throat, especially when swallowing. It should be improving. In the meantime, ice cream is great, milk shakes, soft cold foods will be soothing.

Yes, it was probably the intubation during surgery, or the NG tube afterwards if you had one. Sometimes you can get a little bruising or irritation/swelling from the tubes. I had an NG tube in for several days and I found it really irritated my throat, to the point that talking was uncomfortable. As Meesh mentions, make sure to take lots of liquids, jello, ice cream, and apple sauce. You should start seeing some improvement shortly.

During an emergency surgery, my larynx was hurt by the anesthesia tube. I had no voice for 6 weeks after surgery. I asked what size tube was used, & after that, whenever I met with an anesthesiologist pre-op, I requested a smaller size tube.
