HI....i've had the J-pouch for 17 years and am having a flex sig tommorow under sedation. the GI lab told me I have to do clear liquids ALL day today and then nothing after midnight...my test isn't until 12:15 in the afternoon tomorrow...do you think I really have to have only CLEAR liquids? also, it seems to me that I could eat breakfast today since that will still be well over 24 hours...it's just a flex sig? what do you all think? thanks so much!!!

That's just the way it goes.... It was be unfortunate if you went in and they couldn't perform the procedure because you ate, just a waste of your time (and theirs). Try some jello or chewing a popsicle, it might leave you feeling fuller. I know clear liquids sucks, but like LoriP said, at least there is no prep!!! (I'm sure you remember those days...) Good luck tomorrow! Cher

Today I am on the clear liquids and tonight I do the prep. I go in at 10 am in the morning for them to remove my colon I have FAP. This is my second one(prep)in three weeks. The last time they started me at 4 pm Saturday with milk of mag and clear from then on, did the Prep Sunday night and it wasn't until 1pm before they started the sleepy meds. I was STARVING and my Head was hurting. I tell you this to remind you of just how bad it could be so go get some Chicken broth sit back do nothing and watch a really good movie or three. Hope this helps. Albert (Zeke1966)

I posted this reply under your other post in "Help! Need advice now!"
Well, GI's are all different. Some suggest nothing by mouth after midnight with a Fleet enema before the procedure. Some even have their patients do that whole cleansing thing. But not having any fluids at all for 12 hours seems like it could (that's 'could', not 'will') cause problems. You might want to give their office a call and just reconfirm this based on the fact that you might get dehydrated. I can't remember the reason for clear liquids. Regarding the bleeding and then the stopping of the bleeding. That happens. It's happened to me a couple of times and then it just goes away. I also have a 17-year old pouch. It also sounds like it could be a stricture. They'll figure that all out tomorrow I would guess. Regarding bleeding - it is usually associated with cuffitis. Cuffitis is usually easily detectable by a digital examination because the retained cuff is bumpy (hopefully I'm getting this all correct). But the fact that the flex sig was extremely painful could indicate a stricture. It seems a bit odd that you'd develop a stricture 17 years out though. But on the other hand, those of us with the long-time pouches are figuring out what could possible occur with the pouch long-term since the j-pouch hasn't been around all that long. Good luck with your examination tomorrow and welcome to the site. kathy *********************************************************** Lately it occurs to me, what a long strange trip it's been..... Wow...this site is amazing...thank you all so much for your responses...I can't tell you how much I could have used this over the past 17 years. I only know of 2 people who have ever had a J-pouch...I would love to be a resource to others and will post what happens after tomorrow's flex sig.
Since gummy bears and gummy worms are basically jello, do you think those are OK for today since my test isn't til 1pm tomorrow? other than that I'm just doing Propel and hard candies...after all my UC years, I just can't do broth and jello... thanks again~ SF |

Swanson's 99% fat free chicken broth tastes like manna from heaven when I go through this pre-scoping "diet". I also allow myself lemon popsicles and lemon drop candies as well as the old standby of lime jellow. Ginger ale, Sprite, 7-up, clear apple juice. Hot water with strained lemon juice. Oh, well! Soon it will be over. Be planning what you will eat for that first meal!

I never have to prep before my scopes when my surgeon does them in the office and I just have to stop eating or drinking after midnight when he does them under anesthesia. I think it's overkill, but some doctors require a prep. Good Luck tomorrow.

I'm not sure about the gummy bears but I'd think not. And you shouldn't be doing red jello or anything colored because that may be a bit alarming to the GI - i.e. red = blood.

I would say no on the gummies too. I just had my flex sig two weeks ago. My scope was not until after 3PM. However, I was able to have clear liquids up until the exam, but I did not have any sedation. I dranks lots of broth while on the clear liquid and it kept me going pretty well.
Jan Take a deep breath and relax; this too will pass. |

I just had my 1st colonoscopy last Wed since TD on 1/07.
The nurse specifically ordered to finish the bowel cleanser "Nulitely" yuk!! in 3-4 hours day before the procedure and no water or solid after midnight. If they see any obstruction, they will send you home and ask to do it all over again. I did everything what they told me except to finish the cleanser which I can't do. I couldn't stomach it and it start coming back out after consuming half a gallon. |
