I take imodium. It seems to work well. I buy a no name brand at Costco at about 1/2 the price of name brand. I had a loop ileo after the colectomy, then a an end ileo before take down (my surgery was 3 steps). The loop seemed to cause a lot less leakage and itching than the end ileo. The problem I had with an end ileo is that the stoma may not protrude enough, being too close to the skin.

I've tried both, both seem to work fine. The chewable immodium seems to work better for me but it's more expensive - haven't found it in the no name brand. Twice I took two lomotil and I felt dizzy and sick. I don't know if it was coincidence, if I had the flu, or what but I'm cautious about taking it now. Other days it worked fine for me.

I use Immodium on a regular basis, but the few times I have had the flu, Lomotil is what gets my system to slow down. It is considered a controled substance (when in the hospital it has to be brought from the pharmacy in person, not through their pneumatic delivery system), though, so I prefer to take the Immodium which can be OTC.
My end ileo (which is permanent, however you can have a temp end ileo) behaves much better than the loop. My output has more consistency, my appliances adhere better, I have no skin issues, just overall a much easier experience than wtih the loop. Not to mention that I dehydrated frequently with the loop but don't have that issue with the end unless I get a stomach flu.
