Hey Everyone,

It has been a while since I've been here and I hope everyone is doing well.

I just had a question about taking fish oil. My doc wants me to take it to lower my triglycerides and I began taking 2 a day on Saturday and have had gas and terrible "butt burn" since. Are they connected? Have not had any problems for past 3 months until Sunday. I am taking Fisol by Nature's Way and they are Enteric-Coated which for some reason is supposed to make it easier to absorb.

Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks, Janita

I'm glad you posted this. My FIL is trying to get me to take fish oil. He says it cured his fissures. A women I talked to at a party a couple weeks ago said fish oil changed her life. It sounded like she lost alot of weight, and the fish oil really helped with flushing her system of cellulite. (sp?)

I don't need any more BB. I hope some can answer you question. Smiler

I've been taking fish oil supplements for several years for numerous reasons (gut health, arthritis, serum triglycerides). I don't have any problems with butt burn. However, I do not take enteric coated and don't see any reason to do so. Perhaps it is releasing too late for your metabolism. The medical abstracts I've read regarding lowering triglycerides with fish oil supplements did not specify enteric coated supplements.

It was once postulated that enteric coated fish oil would be more beneficial for treatment of Crohn's because it would be in contact with the terminal ileum more, but this did not pan out. There is no reason not to absorb it earlier, rather than later, which is what the enteric coating would do.

I would suggest trying the non-enteric coated.

As far as healing fissures and "flushing cellulite" goes, sounds fishy to me.

I use to be a nutritional supplements buyer and the only benefit for enteric coated I was aware of was it helped eliminate the fishy burps some people get. Maybe try an it in the oil form (Carlson is my favorite). It doesn't taste bad and if taken with food I don't get any fishy burps.

I have been using fish oil on a "semi-regulary"(3-4 times a week) for a few years, I use the gel caps, and let them desolve in my mouth and discard the gel cap, as of late, I have substituted my fish oil in favor of Flax Oil,(not real sure why, maybe something I read) That, along with a chewable vitamin, Is it doing any good?? I really do not know, being there are no bad side effects, and my pouch seems to be in good shape, I guess I will continue. Just my experence! Good Luck Den

We all gave some,
Some gave all.

I just take the regular gel-caps and swallow them whole. They begin to dissolve in the stomach and release quickly. From what I have read, the omega-3 fatty acids are not as bioavailable in flax oil as fish oil, but if you are vegan or vegetarian, it certainly is a reasonable option.

For several months now I have been taking three Trader Joes fish oil capsules a day. My cholesterol numbers have improved significantly and so has my triglyceride level. I've changed nothing else in my diet so these capsules must be magic! No taste and no gastric distress. I'm impressed!

Sorry I haven't checked in for a few days. Thanks for all the info. I guess I will go get some regular gel caps. I really need to get triglycerides down. Any suggestions on multi-vitamin. I have tried to Forvia that is for IBD but it seems to irratate my pouch after a few days.
