I am going to have this done this morning to look at my small intestines. I do not have a large intestines. I had a straight pull through surgery in 1984. Does anyone know if they are going to put a tube down my throat or nose to inject the dye. I know I have to drink and they are going to inject dye, but will they put a tube in as well. Please help. Scared to death!!

As far as I know, the doctor inserts a small tube through the nose, not the mouth.
Obviously it passes through the throat so expect to be a little awkward(not painful).
Only sad thing, is that they dont "drug" you for it because you need to be awake and help
swallow the catheter.

As for the preparation of the examination, read below:

1. Interruption of solid food for 3 days.
2. Reception of only liquids for 3 days (broth, jelo(?) without fruits).
3. Essentially 12-15 glasses of liquids per day (water, tea, coffee, juices without carbonic and fibres, (eg fresh but condensed).
4. Reception of milk is prohibited.
5. On the eve of examination, the midday, 4-5 tablets Dulcolax(maybe in another brand in your country, not sure).
6. No food whatsoever during the day of examination.

I hope this helps a bit Wink

Michelle, I hope things went well for you today. I would be interested to know what the test involved, if you get the time. Did you get your results immediately? I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they were good results for you!

I know the procedure was already done, but here is a good reference for this procedure for anyone else who is interested:

Fascinating link, amazing test. But...not fun for sure. Thanks for the post! I tried to find some info on it and found some not so good web pages. Thanks again! Michelle...how are you?

Elmer....I hope I never have to have that test. I can't even imagine getting an NG tube. I wish they could find a much less invasive test....that's terrible.

Michelle, I hope you got good results.

Janna, I agree. That article is why it's sometimes better not to know, huh? I love all the references to the fact that parts of the procedure might make cause discomfort for the patient. Do you think?

Elmer, I agree....sometimes Ignorance is Bliss.

That said, I still want to know ahead of time.

Let's just hope that test is not in either of our future....lol
