I was just curious about something. Does not having a colon cause any problems as we get older (50, 60, 70 years of age)? As we start getting to that age we will have enough problems to deal with as it is. Does not having a colon make it any more difficult? Thanks for any advice you might offer.

I'm 66 and had the first step surgery when I was 61 and the second step when I was 62. So far, no problems at all. I have thought about maybe getting to the point (a long time from now, I hope) when I will be bedridden, etc. and I think it would be easier to have an ostomy at that point. I would rather revert to an ileostomy than have to wear a diaper in a nursing home and have frequent, loose bowel movements. If I can't get up and take care of my own toileting, then I'd rather not have the J-pouch. Fortunately, I had a good experience with the ileostomy for an entire year. In fact, I was reluctant to have the takedown!

jason, I had surgery at 49 and I'm now 53, and if anything the jpouch has given me a much better life than I had with UC. And I honestly can't see things being any different than life with a colon at those ages.

I do not know if I am correct in my assumptions but I think mentally we have an advantage. Our perspective is so much different. As most people get older digestive functions change, but this is something we have already experienced.

I had my surgery at the age of 40. I will be 52 this year. I'm fine so far. Everyone has the potential for issues with their bowels as they age. However, when most old folk have bowel problems, it is usually constipation. I look forward to a little of that! My biggest worry is sphincter damage from a vaginal delivery of a really big baby before my pouch was created. I already have pelvic floor weakness. That is the biggest risk in my mind.

Take a deep breath and relax; this too will pass.
