hi all..question can end loop be reversed..i know temp loop can be..also i want to have an end loop but surgeon wants to give me loop op..with all problems i have read about end seems best option..wondering if there is a reason why surgeon wont do end loop op..i have had j pouch many years...thanks in advance

I guess I am confused here. I know what an end ileostomy is, and I know what a loop ileostomy is, but I have never heard of an end loop.

Perhaps you are mixed up. It sounds like your surgeon wants to do a loop ileostomy, but you would prefer an end ileostomy.

Both forms of ileostomy are reversible, as long as there is something to reconnect.

An end ileostomy after your pouch is removed and the anus is closed is not reversible.

A loop ileostomy is technically easier to perform, so is better for the surgeon. The end ileostomy is technically easier to maintain, so is better for the patient.

I think you want a temp end. Your j-pouch and rectum will remain but your temporary ostomy will be an end instead of a loop. The weather temp or permanent is definitely easier to maintain an end ostomy.

Do you mind me asking what is causing you to need a temporary diversion?

I just went back and read your others posts about this.

First. Have you decided you want a permanent ostomy?

I had a j-pouch for 7 years and in Oct 07 converted to a permanent ostomy, I didn't want to ever reconnect I wanted everything to be over and not have to have anymore surgeries. I've had both a temp loop and temp end because my surgeries were done in 3 steps. For me both end ileostomies were much easier to maintain. I think I was in a similar situation as you where I was tired of living on the toilet. I like work outside and exercise but all the trips to toilet and the problems I was having my activity was severely limited.

Now I don't have to worry about the toilet at all, most of the time I don't even realize that my bag is half full, I where a support belt so I don't feel the weight of the bag.

hi..i was advised to have loop..but reading on this website a temp end ostomy seems alot better option..but i have been told i will be getting loop..not sure why surgeon giving me loop if end ostomy is better option..i would prefer end...having permanent ostomy operation i was told has higher risk complications which i am afraid of...

Well, I think what really matters is what complications you are willing to assume the risk for.

As I mentioned before, the loop ileostomy is technically easier to perform, so there is less risk of surgical complications. However, if you intend to have the ileostomy for an extended period of time and perhaps permanently, there is less risk of complications relating to stoma maintenance with the end ileostomy.

I think it is important for you to make an informed decision, so that you are the one deciding what risks are the ones you can live with. If your surgeon is insisting that he will only perform the loop ileostomy, you need an explanation from him regarding his rationale. If you are not satisfied with the response, you should get a second opinion.
