Hi.. I had my takedown on Tues and was sent home yesterday (Friday). I get a little nauseous during the afternoon (yesterday and today).. it isn't horrible and subsides by dinner usually. Anyone ever experienced this? Is it just all the meds I have been on? Anesthetic - fyi, was VERY nauseous after surgery. I am not on any meds, except ibuprofin for pain. Any feedback would be appreciated -- thanks!

You were given ibuprofen following takedown surgery for pain?! OMG! I don't mean to scare you, but that is a serious risk factor for the development of chronic pouchitis!
The Cleveland Clinic conducted a study on this very issue several years ago (in 2005, I believe). If you do a search, I'm sure that you can find a link to it. There have also been several threads on this site that discusses this issue. If I were you, I would discontinue the ibuprofen immediately and call your doctor to discuss this. There are other - and better - drugs than you can take for pain. |

No.. I was not given ibuprofin after takedown. I was given toradol and diludan (sp?).... I was given a script for vicodin, which I am trying to avoid. Maybe I will switch to tylenol?

I had one-step J-pouch surgery 16 years ago. I was nauseated for several days after the surgery. Your intestines have been subjected to major trauma on top of which it takes a while for the anesthesia to leave your system. An anti-nausea med might help. You should also know that I had a major bleed after taking Ibuprofen and aspirin (alternately) for a few months for headaches. Now I take only Tylenol rapid release gel caps (2 at a time) or Tylenol Blast as directed for pain. There are other pain meds available that don't involve N-SAIDS. Maybe give your doc a call. I hope this helps, and my thoughts are with you for smooth healing.

So, are you saying then that you made your own decision to take ibuprofen instead of the narcotics that were prescribed? If so, you need to stop immediately! You can take Tylenol if you don't want to take the other medications, but I don't know how effective it will be in addressing your post-operative pain. I'd just stick with what your M.D. Rx'ed for you and when you don't feel you need it any longer, just stop taking the pills. |

Two things.
One is that I was nauseous for probably a week after takedown. Not badly enough to vomit, but I just couldn't get an appetite going for much of anything. As long as you're not vomiting, drink enough fluids and wait it out. The other is that there's dispute about the pouchitis/ibuprofen thing. I asked my surgeon (at Mayo) about it and he said, unequivocally, that there was no problem taking NSAIDs. The study that seemed to demonstrate the NSAID/pouchitis connection was way too small to be conclusive (and now I can't find it online in order to figure out whether it was actually randomized or not. Odd). That said, I am definitely avoiding ibuprofen for now. Truthfully, there are some headaches that Tylenol of any stripe just won't do a damn thing for, and I get pretty sick from narcotics, so sooner or later I'll probably break down and go for it. Editing to add: Okay, I found the study. It was very small (80 patients), and not randomized: http://lib.bioinfo.pl/pmid:15645406 They took people who had pouchitis and compared them with people who didn't. The people who did were more likely to have taken NSAIDs postop. But the study doesn't establish that the connection is a causative one; there may be some other reason why they are linked. (For instance, that getting sick from narcotics or having a prior history of drug abuse or having some other inflammatory disease that needs to be treated even though the colon is gone--all of which are reasons why someone might pick NSAIDs for pain relief--are related to pouchitis somehow). I'm still avoiding it for now. This message has been edited. Last edited by: Charlotte Gilman, |

For me, any antibiotics I take leave me slighty nauseated. Prior to and after surgery I seem to always be put on a course of antibiotics. Personally, I don't mind the slight state of nausea because it is the only time I don't overeat!

Tylenol is what my doc said to use when the prescribed pain meds made me vomit. After the release from the hospital, I recovered from both surgeries at home with tylenol. It was fine for me.

I have switched to tylenol and it is working great. I never pulled the trigger on the vicodin - I have never taken it before and don't want to feel drowsy/groggy. I think I am through the worst of the pain anyway... Gas has finally subsided!
