I am actually asking this to try to figure out something that is happening with my Mom currently......

Like myself my Mom had UC when I was 16 and had on ileostomy placed in 1976 or 1977...She recently had an emergency hernia repair operation done about 5 weeks ago. The hernia was near her ileostomy but not around it.

Well this last Saturday she wound up going to the ED with pain, an INR of almost 8, WBC of 20,000. Most of her labs were screwed up. They did a CT Scan on Sat and found a pocket of fluid near her ostomy. Well today they figured out that it is actually a very large hematoma. But since she is so sick with all of her labs being messed up, and she has not felt like eating much or doing much, she is too sick to have surgery for now.

Has anyone had a hematoma post surgery, and what did they do to get rid of it? W

We have been through a lot with her during the past 2 years--pancreatitis, pacemaker placed, emergency hernia repair.

just trying to get things straight in my head,

Beth B

They could just drain it without surgery or wait for the body to absorb it. If is is really large though, there is a potential of it becoming infected. However, with an INR of nearly 8 (normal being 1), this means she is over anticoagulated (if she was taking Coumadin), or she is missing clotting factors. She would need vitamin K to reverse this before having any surgery or surgical procedures. Most likely, the clotting issue is probably the reason for the large hematoma and that is the bigger problem.

They may need to be looking at her liver or bone marrow to figure this out if she was not taking Coumadin.

Take a deep breath and relax; this too will pass.

Hi Beth,

So sorry to hear about your Mom. Boy she has been put through the ringer! I had a botched diagnostic laparoscpy in Dec. - the OB/GYN severed a major artery and I wound up with several very large hematomas (one was pint-sized sitting right around my bladder so I had trouble peeing). I honestly have never been in so much pain in all my life. I did a lot of research on hematomas and what I found is that - in general - they do not do anything to them unless they are life-threatening (which can be their size, location, etc.) The negative to draining them is the risk of introducing bacteria. Instead, they usually just let them resolve on their own - the body will reabsorb them. They told me mine could take up to 6 months but only took about 3 (had repeat ultrasounds to track them). However they really are extrememly painful and some people are hospitalized just for pain management. One thing that can help is warm moist compresses to the skin over the area of the hematoma; supposedly helps with the reabsorption. Other than that I just took a LOT of Percocet for about 2 months.

Sorry I can't help much more than that. Please let us know how she is doing. My thoughts are with you both.
