night leakage with zanax?

Anyone else experience night leakage if taking zanax before bed. I have never had this, but recently have been taking a small dose of zanax at night to try and catch up on sleep and to my horror this occurred last night. Guess I will take that off my list Frowner

It might be relaxing your sphincter too much. Maybe you can try taking the Xanax with imodium to see if the imodium will counter that effect?

Sue..tried that last night. I think I am just going to have to eliminate the zanax and go to bed earlier to account for the sleep disruptions. thanks.....

It could be twofold; the sedative effect of the xanax may put you in a deeper sleep so that a potential BM doesn't wake you up when it should, and the muscle relaxant properties could be relaxing the sphincter too much so that some leakage occurs, as Sue mentions.

I'm not really sure what the alternative is. Xanax is an anti-anxiety and has other effects than simply sedative. There are other sleep aids available that may allow you to sleep but don't necessarily provide the muscle relaxant effect that might be leading to the leakage. A good night's sleep is obviously important for your functioning during the day so it might be worthwhile to discuss other options with your doctor. Best of luck!

Spooky..I think it is the deeper sleep as the sound sleep part (for almost 6 hours) has been wonderful...waking to the slight leakage was not.....will try tonight with no sleep aid and see what happens...

Hi kjeane,

I use xanax at night to sleep (along with Trazadone) and frequently have leakage. I wear a large Poise pad to bed and just stick it in my underwear more towards the back than the front.

It doesn't happen every night, but I always wear a pad. For me, the sounder sleep is worth it. Before these meds I was up 8X a night. So now I sleep through it because the BM doesn't wake me up (as Spooky and Sue explained).

But do whatever is best for you. Just wanted you to know this is an issue for me too.

Tammy

Tammy...
I thought I hit the jackpot with a sound sleep for about six hours, only to wake feeling like a loser Frowner. Glad I am not alone on this one... Thanks for Sharing....

kjeane,

Don't feel like a loser! I just spoke to another poucher (I met someone in real life! She is around my age and everything!) and she said this happens all the time to her. She sleeps on a towel. I find the pads are really absorbant. I just make sure to wash well in the morning.

I think it is pretty common. It isn't pleasant, but neither is insomniaSmiler I am sorry it is troubling you though. I am not sure what volume of leakage you are experiencing, but I will tell you that mine is outright diaper filling.

Thanks Tammy. I had to stop the xanax as I was extremely bothered by this and did not like how anxious I felt the next day when I took it the night before. It almost seems to work in reverse after it wears off and I know it can be very addicting. I did read online also that augmentin causes insomnia in many people and I have been on it for 6 months. I am wondering if that is part of my issue with not being able to sleep for more than a few hours at a time without waking and then not being able to fall back asleep.
