Hi there... been having severe abdominal pain for over a week hasnt felt like Pouchits, I have IPS (have had my jpouch for a year now) and after several trips to my gastro & primary and tons of xrays, Ct scan and blood and urine tests they are now telling me that THINK I have strepacocal (spelling) a major bacterial infection.... but they are not certain!! ANYWAYS my primary care took me off Cipro and put me on this Clindamycin, whic I was ready has bed side effects if you have gasto problems and can CAUSE colitis! I am having a horrible time with my Doctors at UCSD in San Diego and am wondering if ANYONE knows about this or if I should be on this antibiotic?! My pain is still there and my BMs are now painful and constipated... ER? WHAT DO I DO? This pain is in the upper abdomin not near my pouch or kidneys and is more on the left. ANY HELP WOULD BE GREAT!??!!!

Sory few mistakes on my grammer (overly tired) I WAS READING that it has terrible side effects if you have gastro problems and can cause colitis. I had a complete colectomy two years ago after havin colitis for 20 years! And I am only 30. Should I be on this antibiotic? my doctors never communicate even though I call them all the time and they are all in UCSD?!!! IM WORRIED.

Hi Lindsay,

My GI told me that Clindamycin can cause you to have a C-diff infection, so would not even consider giving it to me.
I have chronic pouchitis and take cipro, tindamax and tetracycline in 2 week rotation.

Lindsay, My understanding is that most antibiodics can cause colitis. With that being said you don't have a colon and cannot get colitis(but can get pouchitis). Your anatomy is different and the same drugs that may have hurt you before can be a lifesaver now. The antibiodic question goes around here a lot, true, antibiodics kill off all the alleged good bacteria in your gut but it may be an overgrowth of good bacteria that is causng the problems. The Dr gave you an antibiodic to treat a certain bacteria, these antibiodics can be pretty specific to the bacteria it is targeting. If a c-diff secondary infection occurs because of the primary treatment(the big question is if not when) than that will be treated with another antibiotic(c-diff is very unlikely but possible with a pouch). I know it stinks but I would trust the Drs opinion. I know this is a long post but I am trying to explain it. For example this winter I had a sore throat(strep infection), I took Augmentin to kill it, without augmentin the strep could have possible spread to other areas like my heart and potentially done some real damage. I than got pouchitis because the augmentin killed off all that good bacteria. I was then put on flagyl for the secondary infection because augmentin will not kill this bacteria. Now flagyl has worked and I am fine now. With all that said sometimes you need to take that antibiodic and risk the chance of getting a secondary infection. It sucks but that is just how it is. Good Luck, Scott Mc

Yeah, that would make sense if clindamycin was the antibiotic of choice for strep B, but the penicillins are first choice.

Take a deep breath and relax; this too will pass.
