Hi, just to be quick. I've had UC and a j-pouch procedure in 3 parts. My take-down was 8 days ago.
Everything has been going great! Until at dinner, I noticed a funny smell. My t-shirt was wet in a few places, from what appeared to be puss from my stoma scar. I didn't think anything of it, until now. When it has kept oozing. Is it possible that where they have connected the pouch to the small intenstines has split and liquid is oozing out of my stoma scar?! I'm pretty concerned. And feeling very healthy. Thank you. Eagerly awaiting your reply, Eric. |

Unlikely that's what happened. More likely it is puss from your stoma scar. Why did you think it might be stool leaking out? Did it look and smell like stool or did it look like puss?
There are quite a few people who have scars that weep continually and have asked about it. For some of them, it has taken a long time to heal up completely. "...it came to pass..." - I Thess. 3:4b (NASB) |

My stoma opening was left "open" to heal and it was several weeks before there was no more oozing. I kept it covered with 4x4 pads stuck on with a little paper tape.

I am not exactly sure what your leakage looks like but I can tell you my ostomy site drained for awhile.
I had my takedown on 12/19 and on Christmas day I felt my sweater and jeans become soaked. It was orangey pink fluid. It was heavy for a few days and I kept it dressed just so I wouldn't be drenched but the docs and ET nurses said it was normal. My wound was stapled and I think the drainage comes from layers of skin being cut. Best of luck! Thanks for the replys. I sure it's just pus now. I was just suprised by the sheer volume of pus that started oozing. Especially because it started so suddenly.
Thank you everyone. |

Hopefully it's just oozing but if it happened a lot all of a sudden you might want to rule out dehiscence which is where the abdominal muscle that was closed during surgery opens back up. I've read this is most likely 7-10 days post surgery and abdominal fluid would then leak out. I'd guess you'd feel pretty bad if this happened so it's probably not that but since you said that a bunch of liquid came out all at once I thought I'd mention it.
